fuel injection problem

i have a 1986 pontiac sunbird with a 1.8 engine, it has a single fuel injector and it floods and will not start, if i remove the fuel pump fuse and turn the engine over several times it tries to start ,then i put the fuse back in and it will start but floods out and will not stay running(any suggestions would help)
