Broken Headlight Question

The glass on the front of my headlight was broken by a rock and I'm trying to figure out what part needs to be replaced. Would it be the whole big headlight unit (expensive!!) or just the glass front or???

Also, are the lights supposed to work even though the glass front cover is broken?? Thanks in advance.
