Valentine, Escort, or other?

So is it really worth it to shell out $400 for the Valentine 1? WHat about $300 for the Escort? Or is there another radar/laser detector with better bang for the buck. Unfortunately for my checkbook, I think I'm already sold on the V1.

Because I'd like to race guilt-free, without always checking my mirrors for coppers.

I don't want to sound condescending, there must be some misunderstanding. These are radar detectors. They alert me when there are cops around checking for speeders. If I have a good one, then I can street race to my hearts content without having to worry about getting pulled over for speeding. Radar detecters = no cops = more street racing. But mny question is about what type of detectors most people use. I am directing this to the street racers since they tend to be more experienced with cop avoidance paraphanelia. Can anyone answer my question?

The only TRUE solution is to purchase the Valentine1, Bel 980, a Uniden digital scanner and check your mirrors for officers that prefer "pacing" to radar.

plus have a direct link to a spy satellite, direct contact with NORAD, radar absorbing materials, angled body panels to scatter the signal......basically a few extreme primed body pannels should do that plus a huge aerodinamic antena on the back for the signals.........wait am I on to something???????

well from what i hear the valentine 1 is the only really good radar detector......

I wouldn't trust them detectors so much as to being worry free about cops. Like DMC said, some like to pace.. while other times, they're not even paying attention untill you do something stupid right in front of them.

So the best bet is to have a sunroof(or a convertable) that will allow the robot controlled 50 cal to emerge so you can blast John Law away. hehehehe..

Oh yea.. are the Police's radar detectors effective when they're moving? i.e. freeway... when the cop is behind you and points the gun at you... is that how they do it?

Just because you have a radar detector doesn't mean you know when a cop is around. All it tells you is if a cop has their radar on. A cop could be driving behind you without his radar on, and see you racing someone, and bust you for racing, and your radar detector will never go off because he didn't have his radar on.

As far as I understand how those things work, its doesn't only detect the "radar" they use to detect high speeds, but instead it also detects the frequencies in which cops communicate with(I think its called K-band), and also another type.

Now.. my question is, if cops ever DO pull you over, and see one of those things in your car OR your car is parked on the side of road and cop comes up and see the detector.. Can they do anything about it?? Can you get booked for stuff like that? I mean its obvious the purpose of the thing, there's no excuse. I guess you can say its for decoration, but I'd doubt they'd buy that..

I saw a thing on the discovery channel about police radar. I was really surprised how inaccurate they can be. And depending on what type of radar equipment they are using they cant even be sure you were the one they clocked. This is because most of the radar they use acts like a net. It spreads out and covers a section of the road but it doesn't lock on to one car so if their are a few cars they cant be sure who was doing what. Also even if they are using the laser which they can lock on to who they choose the speed given is an estimate. The way the radar gun works is it gives three speeds one high one low and the estimated speed that's the one the cop sees. So if you are ever pulled over and the officer asks you if you know how fast you were going they are NOT trying to let you come clean. They want you to incriminate your self because then you have no hope of fighting the ticket in court.
