94 Altima vibrates really bad

My car vibrates when stopped and in a gear, like at a stoplight. If I shift into "Park" or "Neutral" it stops vibrating.

Got it checked by a mechanic and his
conclusions were one of the engine
cylinder/pistons comibations was not working.
He isolated the problem by removing the spark
plug connecting wire one at a time and the engine
started to stop on 3 of them and on the 4th it
had no effect. He deduced that this cylinder was not
responding. He checked for the spark plug, and connecting wire
and they were good. Then he checked for compression and it
was almost the same on all the 4 cylinders.

He concluded that the injector was not functioning....

Car has 126K miles and no major tune up has been performed.

The mechanic is quoting $400.. is the
diagnosis and estimate correct?

What else could be the problem??

any ideas appreciated...

If your engine is the source of the problem and it goes away when you shift into Park or Neutral, well, your engine isn't the source of the problem.

You are likely having issues with the transmission or engine mounts, have them checked. Your mechanic may also be correct in telling you that you have issues with an injector, but if that were the source of your vibration you would have it 24x7 when the car is running.

It's easy for a mechanic to test an injector and determine it is bad/not, and he or she did the right thing to do the compression check. The KADE24 engine is known for having occasional problems with pistons but not under normal use, and certainly not with the relatively low miles you have - I doubt internal problems are an issue.

Last, besides checking the mounts, you could just have a basic transmission problem - e.g. AT transmissions need regular fluid changes, filters, and because you do not see this issue in P or N, I suspect something is vibrating when you engage the engine to the tranny, either inside the transmission or the entire motor/transaxle assembly at the mounts.

The 2.4l is a big 4, and the Alty has excellent mounts for dampening vibration, like a fluid-filled donut. If any of these crack or are not attached properly, you'd get the vibration you describe.

I have also seen the revolution sensor to cause this problem. This sensor sends a signal(eng crank case speed) to the ecu when ever the car its placed into a gear that will cause it to roll, i.e; reverse, or drive etc. The ecu then uses this signal to coordinate shift points, throttle dampening, cruise control, fuel delivery, fuel/air mixture etc. This puppy goes bad the ecu kind of gets lost sort of speak, causing missfires sometimes, erratic idle, your cruise cont light to flash after the system its desengaged due to pressing on the brakes etc. You will get no warning lights either. The only indicator will be the occasional flashing of the odd light. You can run a test on the system 2 ways. One way is to follow the hanes manual which its kind of confusing, or my way which is to start the car, place it in drive, get up to 15mph or so place trans in N, kill the engine, then restart it. This will run a self diag test on the entire drive train components. Any component fails it will flash a code via the ODD light. GL.

Good info - sounds like AT only, or does this apply to the 5MT also? I've never heard of the sensor, but I also have 5MT, no cruise, so it may be additional.
