Speedo pinion for tire size change?
Anybody fix the speedo error with bigger tires? I looked around but I can't find any info on this.

Everyone appears to just be living with it, more trouble than it's worth. Plus, it keeps your odometer reading down so if you sell it, it will not have logged as many miles. This is not illegal, the odometer only truly logs revolutions which are the only thing that matter with regard to wear and tear. How far you actually travelled is irrelevant.

new tire size - speedo corrections
I recently upgraded my 2001 Xterra SE from 255-65r16 to 265-70r16 tires. I know my speed is wrong. I was wondering how to correct this. Could I replace the speedo cable with one from a 2002 Xterra SE?

Most new vehicles use a reluctor wheel with a magnetic pick-up coil and the Xterra is no exception. It could be recalibrated electrically with a simple reburn of the PCM, but therein lies the problem, no one cares to bother. The factory doesn't give a flying flip if our speedos don't read accurately after installing larger tires and the after-market cares even less about Nissan owners. I recommend doing what I did. Measure your differential with a GPS and then drive accordingly. Now if you owned a Chevy, Ford, Dodge or Toyota you could have an accurate speedo. But alas, we are lowly Nissan owners and have to sort things out on our own. Things are improving with each passing year, but the wheel of progress spins slowly when it comes to us. That is my way of saying, we have to deal with it until the after-market gods smile on us a little stronger.

32's tend to be 5mph over at 60mph. 31's can sometimes give exact readings (Nissan's not to tight on theirs evidently). Below 60mph it's not really a factor for radar. Just do the math down from there.
Hell, I've got a Canadian spedo in the US with 32's and I get by. |
