Missing grill on the front bumper ?

I just bought a used '00 GT and the grill that's supposed to be in the opening of the bumper in front of the radiator is missing. Are there some models that don't have it or why would someone remove it ?

maybe they thought that the mesh screen caused wind resistance thus less performance (not likely but it was worth a guess)
