Reliability???!? HELP

hi, I'm interested in buying a 3000GT VR4 for myself, and i was wondering if anyone knew where i could find anything about their reliability and repair costs. i need to do some convincing, cuz my dad wants me to get a 3000GT SL, and even though i know its good, i want a VR4, although if i can show him that the VR4 is not too expensive to maintain and is reliable, he will let me get it. tell me if you know of anything . thanks.

Bad news. The VR4 is not cheap to maintain or cheap to insure. Its a high performance car and they are all pricey to keep up. Everything from having to use premium gas on up. I love mine, but unless you're in the money - stay away from the VR4.

yup, what he said. my first 3000GT was an SL, very cheap to maintain and insure. My next 2 VR4s were twice the cost of the SL, in all aspects

I would'nt recomend the VR4 or any High end Supercar, TT or not to anyone who is still in school and potentially living pay check to paycheck.

If you even have to ask those questions, don't bother. The VR4 is not a good daily driver, and the repair costs are Horrible. I love the car, and I new what I was getting into when I bought her, but if your the type of person who is going to school, and or living paycheck to paycheck, your better of with the SL, still fast, Sorta and looks the part.

Bottom line, unless you can see yourself paying the rent, the car note, the nasty insurance, as well as potential repair and maintenance bills that range from $500(Getting off easy) to over a $1000(Better sit down for this), get the SL.

I'm in school I drive a VR4 I dont have money problems, what the hell. Are you trying to scare this kid? Ok so you're right they are expensive. Parts are not cheap but not thaaaaat expensive. The real bitch is the labor. If you can't work on it yourself, like I do, then don't get a VR4. I am finishing up a complete teardown of my VR4 engine (2-3 Months of work). Parts totaled around $1200 (Gaskets, bearings, seals, heads, pumps) , but labor is free money wise b/c I do it myself on the weekends. I asked a shop and they said buy a new car, or pay us $8000 for parts and labor. These cars are real touchy. all I did was split my top radiator pipe and the car overheated and both heads cracked. bottom line, unless you can work on them yourself, get an SL. Mine is 4-SALE It runs great and is easy to keep up. has 176k miles and still running strong. Good Luck.

? i hooked up with some of the street race jockies here last night, and when i mentioned i was gonna sell my car for a VR-4 i got a bad response (mainly from one dude and his friend but no one else said otherwise soo...) he said no u dont want a VR-4! he says their are breakdown machines! he said their the most "unreliable pieces of shit",then he named off, several reasons... way to heavy, terribly unreliable, always somethin breaking, parts and everything are anus expensive, and their slow! he says at the track all the VR-4s are runnin 14's! and their hard and expensive to mod! he said never buy one! now personaly i thought he was talkin outa his ass, but... i thought id get yalls thoughts before i decided what to think about his statements! also since he hasnt owned a vr-4( only an sl) i didnt think he knew jack, but... never can tell, so any help is as always apreciated!

That guy is talking out his ass. Every car has its detractors. I've seen Z06 pulling high 14s as well. Does that mean the car is a piece of shit or slow? No - it means the driver doesn't know how to drive it. He has no idea about the reliability of these cars. The words full of shit come to mind.

I would say that most cars on the market today are definetly reliable to an extent. Once you start adding mods and launching at 5000RPM, shit is going to hit the fan. Launching is bad for ANY car, it just so happens the 3k trannies aren't as strong as some others.

Imagine standing still and someone comes charging at you like a bull. (Remember, you can't move. ) Now, would you REALLY want to do that to your tranny by launching? Ouch.

well understood, as is that racing is hard on ANY car, even the super reliable Hondas!!! but, just like driving it like not like a gramma but decent, as a daily car, and mabey raced once in a while, (i know i will lol im not kidding anyone ) they hold up pretty well?? (also when i race i dont think i'll dump clutch past 4k rpm's.... i dont even do that in my honda!) ??

Hey guys, all of this VR4 reliability talk is scaring me , I am thinking about getting an SL and I know the VR4 and SL share many parts being they are the same car, different models, so does any of this reliability or high cost of repair go for the SL too?
