any mods to mazdaspeed protege?

I just test drove a new mazdaspeed protege and liked it,
just wish it had a little more punch. It seems like it should be
fairly easy to tune these cars up. It already has a good starting
platform. Anybody got some suggestions or have already started
tuning one of these?

I,ve found boost controlers,FMIC,and CAI,s.Been seeing complaints on another forum with stumbling, blown subs, bad bushings. Ithink they need
to flash ecu for leaner fuel curve. I,m wathing to see if Mazda is going to fix problems before I buy. I may have to reconsider WRX.

Upgrade turbo to Garret T03/T04 hybrid, upgrade to 550cc injectors, Apexi CAI, Greddy Emanage, and upgrade intercooler to a horizontal front mount set-up. These mods will set you back 1800-2000, and at 10-12 psi on the new turbo/intercooler set up, you're looking around 275hp, plenty to play with all the "big boys", and for alot less. I would also try to find a Turbo back exhaust set-up, the factory header is farely decent, and doesn't need to be replaced immediately. I think the best upgrades would be to relocate the intercooler, and add the CAI and exhaust, then you're well over 200 at the fly, and extremely fast. I've gotta guy who will sell me all the stuff for fairly cheap, email me, and I'll give you his name.

I would be careful if you are going to run that kind of setup without getting some forged internals to handle it. It has been done without going forged, but I hope you can really, really tune a car to avoid detonation.

The T25BB that comes with the car has been pushed to 21 psi on race gas yielding 263whp by joep in NY. It can't flow as much volume as a bigger turbo such a T3 or T03-T04 hybrid, but unless you are really going for some huge numbers (again probably requiring forged parts), the stock T25 is a sweet little turbo, and you won't need much more. It has nearly no lag at all, and now that mazda has fixed our PCM, it is very smooth and quick.

My mods to this date are 3" turbo-back exhaust, injen CAI, iON Performance FMIC, NGK BKR7E plugs(1 heat range colder and copper instead of platinum), Mobil 1 syn. oil, Autometer boost, A/F ratio, and oil pressure gauges, Blitz DTT-DCII turbo timer, and the new Mazda PCM flash. The car is a beast now, and sounds really mean. I have not yet dyno'd on this setup so I don't know exactly what it is putting down.
