98 Millenia tensioner

I was hoping someone could help me, I have a 98 Milly 2.5 after I had the water pump, timing belt and other belts changed I started hearing a rattling sound coming from the engine when I step on the gas. The mech that did the work said it is the fan belt tensioner and it would be $250 to replace but it wouldn’t do any damage if I just left it. I started looking around on google and it looks like the Milly 2.5 doesn’t have a fan belt tensioner but I did see a Timing belt tensioner and a T-belt tensioner. To make a long story short I bought the T-belt tensioner for $50 and I’m planning on doing the work myself does anyone know where this is located or how to get to it I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Also a diagram or step-by-step instructions would be helpful. Tnx

Re: 98 Millenia tensioner

I just had the Exact same problem..

I hope by now you figured out it was the Automatic Hydraulic Timing Belt Tensioner.

It was about $150.00 for the part.

Re: 98 Millenia tensioner

Chrisrock3, look to the bottom left side of the engine under the radiator hose. It mounts with 3 screws, the top 2 are somewhat easy, but the 3 is somewhat hard. You will need an angled wratchet and a long extention. You also have to take of the bottom plastic cover and the part of the right wheel well cover. Where did you find the belt tensioner for $50 bucks. I can send you a picture of the one I took out to see if you bought the right one. I still need to find one.

I had my mechanic do it, hehe.

Are you talking about the automatic hydraulic tensioner, or the tensioner pulley ?

I think that with the hydraulic tensioner he just screwed it on.

The tensioner pulley he had to use a chain wrapped around they pulley to put it on I think.
