Gas mileage not as good as identical trucks

I've talked to 6 other owners of 02 Z-71s with the same everything. Engines, gears, factory tires, etc. They all get the same range of gas mileage, 16 to 18 mpg. I don't dog my truck and I get 15-15 and a half. I have a K&N factory type air filter and a Hypertech as the only modification. I removed the MAS and srayed it with contact cleaner in case it was oiled from the filter, but it didn't help. the Hypertech didn't really affect the mpg. I have syn. motor oil and 30psi in the front tires and 28 psi in the rear. There are no codes on the computer. Could a spark plug be weak or set wrong? Maybe a weak coil? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Cliff

Remove your modifications and see if your mileage improves.
Also check the tire badge on the inside of the drivers door...I think your tire pressure is a little low.

Re: Gas mileage not as good as identical trucks

I got 14-15 MPG even with the K&N FIPK and Superchips programmer. I went to Mobile One oil but the big difference came when I got rid of the factory muffler and replaced it with a Borla Turbo one. I now get 18-19 MPG. The muffler is a little loud in the cabin and kinda drones but it's not that much louder then stock outside.

Re: Gas mileage not as good as identical trucks

I lost mpg on my 99 5.3 when I replaced the factory muffler with a flowmaster dual out setup. Low tire pressure will also add rolling resistance and reduce mpg. I also noticed that as my truck got older my mpg continued to drop. When it was new I got around 16mpg in town and a little over 19 on the highway. When I got rid of the truck it had 30k on it and I averaged just under 15 around town.

I would say that your modifications have caused your reduction in gas mileage.
There needs to be some backpressure in the exhaust so the O2 sensors will read properly and the cylinders will scavage properly.

Why do you think drag racers have been installing mufflers and exhaust pipes instead of leaving the headers open?
