REPLACING OIL PAN GASKET...please help

hi there again....ive noticed that my oil pan gasket needs to be replaced (leaking oil)...is there any difficulties in this procedure? is it very straight forward? do i need to remove any parts besides the bolts holding the pan? do i need to put any special sealant on the NEW oil pan gasket when i replace it? how much do the oil pan gaskets go for at the dealer?


any help would be much appreciated...thanks

btw, i have a 1994 g20 t with auto trans(AT-used as a daily transporter in traffic filled areas!!)

yeah it is very straight forward as you thought. drain the oil, pull the pan down, clean the pan up, clean the old sealant. I don't think they use pan gasket on later model Nissan. If you go to dealership and ask them for pan gasket, they will sell you a 30 dollars RTV sealant.

the reason why i am kind of sketchy about changing the oil pan gasket my self is because i own a honda integra and i have changed the oil pan last year! i had to remove the lower exaust manifold and it was just a hassle.

so are you positive that the oil pan does not use a gasket? i just wanted to make sure before hand.....also what would i use? do they have the GOOD quality sealant at KRAGEN? or what would you recommend? thanks for your reply

The " gasket marker" they sell should be ok. But if you so concern and willing to spend a little more than use the dealer stuff. Or go NAPA and ask the guy behind the counter ( I trust Napa guy more than Kragen )
And I noticed that the RTV from Nissan factory is orange color.
and yeah I am pretty positive they don't use pan gasket.

There are two oil pans on the SR20 engine.

The upper oil pan is aluminum and does require the exhaust to be dropped to remove. You remove the upper pan by inserting bolts into special threads at the back of the pan expressly for this purpose. But, before you drop the upper pan, you have to drop the lower pan as well as some oil baffles underneath the lower pan.

The lower pan is steel and painted black. Once you remove the bolts, it's difficult to remove the pan. Kent-Moore makes a special tool for this purpose. I've had some good luck with paint scrapers or putty knives, but they have to have a sharp edge. I also want to say that if you do this, you are on your own. I make NO recommendations.

There are no traditional gaskets used anywhere on the SR20 engine block (this does not include manifolds). There are some o-rings that are used as well.

This is what Nissan uses:

Grey RTV: all oil gaskets
Blue RTV: Water pump
Black RTV: Thermostat and entrance of water pipe to head

The grey RTV is a special formulation for high torque application.

If you are this sketchy about the pan, you might want to pay somone to do it right the first time for you because this seems like it is going to turn into a nightmare for you!!! I'm not talkin down to you but the constant on and off of the pan might scar the aluminum and you might have more problems with the pans....:smoka:

So far as I know all P-10's pan's are the same.

You can get either one. They will offer you the stuff in the tube but you can still buy the regular gasket replacement from NISSAN. I don't have a part number and BECK/ARNLEY also makes the original gasket with some sort of filter that didn't fit in my car, must have fit another year G20. I have a 95' G20t

The original gasket is RTV grey.

The grey is designed specifically for high torque applications.
