Question about driveshafts

Can anyone tell me how far must a driveshaft go into the tranny?
My 82 Ta swap(to a 400 pontiac) is going well. And this may be a problem , or is it? I dont know know everything. Also on the site there has been a debate to wether a pontiac 400 is a big block or a small block. Which is true? or are the all one size? thnx

Re: Question about driveshafts

The driveshaft usually sticks in about 9 Inches to 1 foot but really depends on the tranny and the Yoke size and from what I know with Pontiac block's there is no big block but maybe someone else knows more about this subject.

Re: Question about driveshafts

thanks formula, the engine as you may have seen is a pontiac 400, with a pontiac tranny, going into an 82 ta.
would have expected to have alot of problems, but no it hasnt been that way, guess im the only one whos done this, the 82 shaft shows it was deeper in the chevy , tranny(discoloration)
it reaches in there now, just not quite as far, (maybe one and one half inches). Why would i do this? had a 305, in it when i got it,crank bearing went bad, threw in a 350, same thing, so i have all these pontiac engines just sittin here , the Ta is a pontiac, its kinda unique is it not?
was just wondering is this depth ok,been wanting to send a pic, but want to wait till its off the ramps
