Changing timing belt...
I need help on this. If any one could give me a good site or good description of what to do exactly it would be very helpful. I already bought the chiltons manual and its kind of vague on some steps. i already took off the top cover and the power steering belt. i'm not sure in what to do now. I know i need to take off the crankshaft pulley but im not to sure about when i'm supposed to set it at TDC.
Do I do it before or after i take off the belts? I know this is a really important step so if you guys could help i'd really appreciate it.....thanks alot... |

I just did mine on my civic, and the only thing that really gave me a problem was the crank pulley bolt, its torqued to 135 ft lbs. Most impact wrenches wont be able to take that off, I had to fab up a crank pulley holder and beat on a breaker bar with a sledge to get the bolt loose. Basically to replace the timing belt, you take off the valve cover, top timing belt cover(then set no1 cylinder to tdc, there are marks on the cam pulley), a/c belt, ps belt, and alternator belt. Unbolt the two top engine mount bolts and take off the lower timing belt cover. Now loosen the timing belt adjuster bolt(dont take it off, just loosen), now you should be able to get the belt off. Installation is the reverse order, you might want to replace the water pump while you have everything apart.

in the future, bump the key with breaker bar being held by frame, the starter spins the motor in the direction needed to loosen the bolt....
ps, that's almost ANY car

DON'T MISALIGN THE TEETH ON THE BELT!!! you'll throw off your timing then you'll regret it. i know what you mean about the crank pulley nut. that was a BISH!!! yeah do your h2o pump too while u at it. i upgraded to spoon gears too since i had everything off. left my a/c belt off too, even tho it's hot as hell here in Okinawa. i'm talkin humidity with a capital V! however you spell humidity...
