89 Olds Cutlass oil filter cover size
Does anybody know the size of the plug holding in the oil filter, specifically the hexagonal part where the socket wrench goes? I don't want to strip it trying to change the oil.....
Thanks. |

It's a Cutlass Cruiser, the wagon version of the Ciera.

Re: 89 Olds Cutlass oil filter cover size
Also, is there any way of shrinking the rubber gasket on it to remove the cover, as it's on really tightly.

Re: Re: 89 Olds Cutlass oil filter cover size
No...it was probably put on there with waste oil rubbed on the end of the filter. That creates a "cement" between the filter and the engine. THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING TO DO...for the simple reason that the filters are a pain to get off. I've changed filters that were so tight that the filter wrench crushed the filter, and I've had to either chisel it off...or stick a screwdriver through it and try to turn it that way. NOT FUN!
I hand tighten all my oil filters and have never had one leak yet. I am also able to spin them off by hand when it's time for the 3000 mile change. Now I'm not familiar with the Cutlass crusier. You say the filter has a nut on the end of it? Or are you talking about a wrench for the filter itself?

That "cement" sounds right, because not even the friendly folks at Goodyear could budge the filter cover with their torque wrench. Is there anything besides time that will weaken the "cement"?
The oil filter looks like the insides of a regular can-type oil filter. It's about 2" in diameter by 2.5"-3"? tall, designed to go inside the engine (and is a royal pain in the rear to remove, even when everything works). The cover holding the filter in is about .5" bigger in diameter than the filter, with a 25mm hex-bolt head in the center. The metal it's made from is about 3mm thick with a 2mm rubber gasket around the edge, and it's located to the left to the oil-drainage plug on the bottom of the engine. Both are in the middle of the engine, right in line with the wheels. The Cutlass Cruiser is the wagon version of the Cutlass Ciera sedan. No different mechanically, just some more sheet metal in the back. (They got the name right, 'cause mine does nothing but cruise. No acceleration at all, but good at keeping speed.) |
