Timing Problem

After installing a rebuilt 318 in an old Dodge pickup, the timing cannot be set to the vehicles specification. The engine will start and run with the timing advanced (around 16 deg. BTDC). When retarding the timing to the vehicles specification (12 deg. BTDC), the engine abruptly stops running. Got any ideas on a troubleshooting approach?
