automatic transmission help

Hello

Can you guys help me out a little?
As you already know, my girlfriend has a white 99 G20.
She experiences a HUGE lag in her transmission.

Sometimes when some extra power is needed, such has changing lanes or merging into freeways....the power isn't there.
You hit the gas and nothing happens for about 3 seconds and suddenly the engine catches up to push the car.

I'm actually really DUMB when it comes to automatic tranmission since my Accord is a 5speed.
HAHAHA, you guys should watch me try to drive an automatic.
My left foot aways wants to do something and I always want to change gears!!!
You want to know how bad I am???
Quick story.....
I was driving my family (7 members) in my dad's minivan. We were going up the hills and because there was so many people in the van, the car didn't really climb up the hill very well.
I wanted to drop to a lower gear to help out the engine, but when I heard the word "downshift" in my head...I pressed on the clutch!!!!
GUESS WHAT...there is NO clutch. Instead it was the brakes and the entire van stopped completely in the middle of the hill.
Can we say OOOOOOOOOOPS!!! :jump:

Just 2 suggestions; fluid level and kickdown cable adjustment.

Hello

Thank you for your response.

So this is not a normal thing for G20s?!?!?!
I've only driven one, so I wasn't sure.

I know what the throttle cable is...how to I check to see if it's tight enough?

What is the kickdown cable that you speak of?

And lastly, the pan filter.
Are you talking about the oil pan?

THANKS again
you're a big help.
I'm sure I would be the best boyfriend if I can make her car faster.

The Haynes manual that I have for UK Primeras describes a kickdown cable on the RL4F03A (P10) and RE4F03A (P11) transmissions. I'm just assuming that the North American G20s have the same thing. It runs from the throttle cam to the transmission and makes the tranny downshift when the throttle is 'stabbed'. Throttle cable adjustment could certainly affect it's operation also.

Yes, the pan filter ... in the tranny oil pan. Read 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of this http://www.se-r.net/transaxle_clutch/auto_lsd_info.html
