ok, heres what you do. (or what i would do anyways)

go buy a new set of spark plugs and install them in the car.
take your car for a quick test drive and run it fairly hard for about 15 minutes. stop the car, and take out each plug one by one and examine it. If you have a bad fuel injector, one or more cylinders will run really lean, and this can be determined by the plug being a nasty white color with blisters. If all of your plugs look good, check for a short in the wiring.

If this doesnt solve the problem, check the plugs again after a day or so. If it is a fuel injectio problem, it will make the car run lean.

You can also get a service manual and use it to look up the specs for a fuel injector......meaning put a digital test meter on it and measure the resistance. If any dont fall within spec, replace that injector.

the spark plug trick works if you have mpfi injection.

my ECU is throwing the same code right now. I put fuel injector cleaner through it for now, and it helped a tiny bit, but I just dont' have the cash to replace anything important right now. I have almost no power below 2500 rpms as well, and my car can't pull for SHIT above 55. Once I get out of school in mid May then I am going to fix this. I'll probably buy two new injectors anyway, just because the current ones are so old. While I am at it I will probably get a new fuel filter and check all the power lines to the injectors. I'll keep you posted.

i replaced my sparks about a month ago, i just replaced my feul filter last night, and my car is only dual point injection, so ill have to do the multimeter thing, cause thats what it say to do in my haynes, it should be in between 5 and 7 ohms of resistance

Pull the injectors out and set them in a can of gas or fuel injector cleaner overnight...I bet theres shit built up on the ends of them.

Also try to put a full tank of 93 octane in your car. I always do like 2 tanks of 89 than a tank of 93 to keep things clean.

Alright, heres an update. I checked the resistance over my injectors, only two because its dual point injection. The manual says it should be between 5-7 ohms, but my upper injector is 9.35 and my lower one is 10.35 ohms. So wut do u peeps think should i try and replace them, what will i be lookin at for prices here? I also dumped sum feul injector cleaner in the gas, it helped a little, but it still is backfiring and chugging below 2500. The funny thing is if im driving highway it runs PERFECT, its only if im starting and stopping that it does this. Also if and when it does stall, its almost impossible to get it started again. Any ideas?

Hey dude,

I have an '89 red civic with much the same prob as you have, and I believe the starting and chugging problems are two seperate problems:

the starting problem ( if your engine turns over nicely, but just won't start) then it's most likely your main fuel relay, that's what was the problem with my car for a while, the starting problem will get worse, usually after having the car hot and off & on starting (like gassing up or dropping off a movie and zipping back into your car). main relay is like $70CDN, and easy to install.

the chugging problem I dunno, I think you're on the right track, and I've replaced my plugs with bosch plat +4's, thanks for your insight, I'll check the resistance on my inject's tonight and see if they match up (or are similar) to yours.

Hopefully this has helped, I know you guys have helped me!

-Adam.

the bosch platinums are ur problem, i figured my prob out when i replaced my brand new ngk platinums with champion copper plus. the car runs mint now, gewt sum kind of copper plugs in there instead oif platinum

if its running better at higher RPM, then its prolly your primary injector that is going out. check to see if you are getting a good signal TO the injectors, do this by hooking a noid light to the plugs while the car is running. i know that you wont be able to start the car with the primary injector disconnected, so disconnect it while someone holds the throttle above 2500rpms, and then stick the noid light in.

if you cant afford a noid light, get one of those small christmas tree light bulbs, and bend the terminals out so you can stick them into the plug, it will light up just like the noid light will
