1996 Explorer Remote Needs Programming
I have a 1996 Explorer XLT that has a Ford "aftermarket" alarm system. When I purchased the vehicle, the seller gave me a two-button remote and told me that it was new - that he programmed it by pushing a button under the dash and a remote button simultaneously. The remote is black with "Arm" and "Disarm" buttons. It says "Ford" on the remote. The remote became wet a few months ago and hasn't worked since. I took it to the dealer and they have no idea what to do to get me a new remote. I found a new remote that looks exactly the same on Ebay, so I purchased it. The new remote was suposed to have been for 1996 Ford vehicles. The electrical board on the inside of the new emote looks different than the old one. I peeked my head under the dash to look at my alarm unit. It has a sticker on it which says, "TSWHR0279 04/18/95," another sticker that reads "Ford Vehicle Security System" and there is a button that I have been using right next to the alarm to bypass it since the remote has been out of commission. There is a sticker on the inside of the new remote that reads, "MM-51 3-29-96. The outside back of the new remote reads, "FCCGOH-MM6-101890 DOC:1409 K791." The old remote is so worn that I can't get any numbers off of it. I can't get the new remote to work although I have tried the ignition reset/programming method where you turn the vehicle off&on 5 - 10 times. I have tried many variations of this. I'm not sure my new remote is the correct one for my system. Does anyone have any advice?

Remote problem fixed - 1996 Aftermarket Remote Programming Instructions
I visited the dealership this afternoon and the service people would not help me with programming instructions. They quoted $65 for a new remote and $75 to diagnose the problem.
I purchased the new remote, looked at the programming instructions and tried them on my Ebay remote. They worked!!!! OK, here are the programming instructions for my 1996 Ford Explorer XLT aftermarket (Ford) alarm system: 1) Turn ignition key to "on" without starting engine 2) Press and do not release the alarm bypass button located under the dash (directly below the steering column and above the brake pedal) which is located next to the alarm computer module. Hold for 15 seconds and don't release until all steps are completed. 3) The alarm will chirp 3 times, telling you that it is ready to receive your remote code. 4) Wait 5 seconds, then press the "arm" or "lock" button on your two button remote. 5) The alarm will again chirp, to let you know you have successfully programmed the remote. 6) Repeat steps 4 - 5 for any additional remotes you wish to program. 7) Release the bypass button and turn the ignition off. Check to make sure the newly programmed remote(s) work by pressing the arm and disarm buttons to see if they work. This should save you about $150 if you can do it yourself! Good luck! |
