I have 98 Civic LX with Mileage around 30,000.
I took my car to the dealer for oil change about 3 weeks ago. When it done, the mechanic told me the alternator of my car gets weak and need to be replaced. I took my car to the mechanic whom I trust to get second opinion. Coz alternator get weak with mileage not with years. He checked alternator, battery and electricity system and didn't find any problem. Everything were fine. However, there is a problem. I quote from the service note: "The engine cranks slowly after the car has been sitting test the starting/charging system. The battery required recharging, but then passed the load test. Parasitic draw aeraged 8mA. However, if the key was left in the ignition lock, engine off, and the key was wiggled the parasitic draw increased to 39mA." There was recall for iginition switch last year and I changed them at dealer. The mechanic I took my car to get second opinion told me the alternator is fine. The problem seems to him a ignition switch. Apprantely, there is a drain from battery when I take off the key. I think this may be a defect of iginition swith which I replaced last year at dealer. I thought about taking my car to the dealer, but I don't think dealer will admit this. (They told me to replace "FINE" alternator) and they will probablly ask me to pay for the check fee and even the problem is ignition switch, I think they will not admit and trying to rip me off. Is there anybody having the same problem? Or please advise me what should I do. Thanks!! |

Re: Civic 98, drain from the battery
If you had the switch replaced within 12months or 12K miles then there would be no charge to replace it again IF its bad.
Dealer will have you sign for 1hr of labor, if they find the bad switch, warranty will pick-up the labor & parts. |
