My 2010 Sonata has trouble changing gear between 35-50 mph at times, begins to shake and seeming to stall but never turning off, resulting in the check engine light turning on. After a while the light will turn off and the car will drive just fine. It also hesitates to change gear while going uphill and the light kicks on again until it eventually goes off again and drives normally. I have checked the fluid and it looks fine and at the right level. The question here is am I better off taking it to a strictly transmission repair shop (AAMCO), a repair shop that does all auto care including transmission work, or biting the bullet and taking it to a Hyundai dealership and paying out the wazoo. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated!

First thing you need to do is get the code read. This might help tell why it is doing what it is doing and it may end up being a simple repair if you are lucky.

Common Transmission Problems would be low or dirty transmission fluid caused by leaking and contamination, worn clutch, worn gear synchronizers or failed needle roller bearings. Due to the intricate parts in the transmission system it's recommended to visit your trusted car shop to further diagnose the problem to avoid ruining your car completely. Hope this helps!

Check that tranny oil level. Don’t for a second think that nonsense about lifetime oil means any thing. If it’s that old and never been changed it may be all you need is a fluid change. Those modern electrically shifted servos don’t work very well and start getting sticky when the oil gets nasty. Sometimes a fluid change works, sometimes not. It’s worth a shot. Cross your fingers

The symptoms described sound more like a misfire than a transmission issue. Stealthee's recommendation to check the diagnostic codes is the place to start. I suspect you'll have a code related to a misfire.



If you're going to take it to a shop, a well-equipped independent shop that services multiple automotive systems is the better approach, at least for getting a diagnosis.
