Windshield Wipers Going Crazy

I've got a 4dr 99 Tahoe 4x4 LT that has decided to run the wipers on high any time you touch the wiper switch. And don't think they turn off when the switch does. The will usually stay running fro 10 seconds or so after they have been switched off and usually right in middle position on the windshield. This is VERY frustaraiting! I called the dealer and they said it was probably a switch failure and that a new switch was $400.00!

Please tell me that there is something else that causes this to occure.

My wipers had started messing up also and I was told that there is a small box on the inside of the hood mounted up against the back of your engine. It is right under the windshield. It is in a square shape. I was told by a friend that I could replace that myself and buy a new one at the auto parts store.(Autozone) I have not yet replaced it, but I might pretty soon. I don't know how much it would cost, but I am sure it will be a lot more cheaper than the dealer.

Check and clean the connector at the wiper motor. I had to pull mine apart and clean the contacts real good then with some dilectric grease put it back together. Works fine now.

Mine would stop in the middle if I used the pulse or continue to run for a couple of cycles like you describe sometimes stopping in the middle and sometimes they would work properly. I narrowed it down to that connector one time after they stopped in the middle of the windshield. Try wiggling that connector after they stop and see if they finish the cycle and return "home".

I'm having a similar problem with the wipers on my '95 Jimmy S-15. My questions are, where is the wiper motor and how hard is it to get to?

Also, there are three 'boxes' on the firewall behind the engine. Which one is associated with the wipers?

That seems to resolve the problem. The connection will probably slip again. I'm thinking of putting a plastic tie around the clip to hold in place.

problem is wiper delay board in motor unplug connector at motor remove 3 screws and pull off cover pull out board look close at board at connector end there are 5 soder spots 1 or 2 of them will be cracked resoder problem gone problems buz noise, wipers stop,no delay,washer pump inop

Jay hit it right on the head. I had the same problem and I re-flowed the solder runs on the connector of the main control board. I also found some boards on e-bay, if you don't know how or can't solder. They were running for about $30.00 for the boards... I hope this helps.. Good Luck..Go Navy....

My Chevy had a recall on the wiper motor. They replaced the wiper motor for free and I was on my way. Never saw the problem again.

The recall is for 1997 and old vehicles. So if you have a 1997 or older you can take it to the dealer if not you'll have to pay. Doesn't make sense because they have the same part number for the wiper motor/controller on the 1997 and 1998/99.

OK, here's my saga...

I have a 1997 2-door Tahoe that I recently purchased from a private owner. The wipers behaved in the manner that some of you have described AND the dome lights didn't work. Today, I found out that my Tahoe isn't covered under the recall so I read through this thread for some ideas. I saw the suggestion to pull the wiper control card out and check for cracks in the solder joints. Did find the cracks and resoldered them. Wipers still weren't acting right.

On a whim I pressed the end of my Torx screwdriver against the center of the control card with the black plastic cover off. Shazaam !!! The wipers began to exhibit normal behavior. As a fix, I put some anti-static foam (the kind that electronic parts are commonly packaged with...PC video and sound cards, etc.) and put that between the circuit board and the black plastic outer cover, then put the 3 Torx screws back on. This pushes the circuit board into the opening more firmly, which I believe puts the 2 spring contacts on the board in better contact with the wiper motor. I opted not to try to bend the contact for fear of jacking them up.....choice is yours.

After grinning with delight at my properly functioning wipers, I then noticed the dome lights were working correctly. Elation was mine !!!

This confirms the mention in the "dome lights not working right" thread about a correlation between the dome lights and the wipers.

I would still suggest reflowing the solder joints as suggested in previous threads.

I can attest to this. I have a 98 Tahoe and my widshield wipers would act up once in a great while. Then one day in a heavy down pour they just quit and would not work at all. I am thankful to still be alive after that experience. I read this thread and fixed the broken solder joints and it has worked fine since.

I have a 97 Tahoe and the wiper is doing the same thing. How exactly do I remove the wiper delay board?

The card is only $23 at a parts store.

I agree with re-flowing the solder connections. My earlier post of checking the connector ended up being a temp fix. Mine started acting up again so I re-flowed the solder joints about a month ago and it's been working perfect since. (knock on wood)

I had intermittent wiper on 1997 Tahoe, nine months ago.

It was repaired under factory recall (C03023-S), replace defective printed circuit card.
