77 Pontiac Bandit Trans AM Blackbird
Hi all! Happy New Year! I finally got through this build so I can move on to all the other cool stuff I want to start! I like when I get something done! This was not my best or a perfect build, but it was fun, that's what counts right? Revell's kit of this Pontiac is good in that it is well engineered to make everything fit. The decals, while okay, (waaay better than the flaky ones AMT put out), I found myself making my own Trans AM graphics for the sides and rear spoiler and adding some BF Goodrich tire markings. I'm proud of one thing.....this is wholly a rattle can paint job. Tamiya surface primer, Tamiya Black and two coats of Testors Wet Look Clear. Front headlight area is Duplicolor Gold. I buffed it a little with Novus 2 & 1 then Mother's Scratch Remover, and that's it. I resisted more polishing, sanding, etc.
I put the decals on and resisted the urge to clear coat them because I masked all the window trim flat black before decals and didn't want to do that over.. Overall, I'm really satisfied with the kit and I recommend it. I'm turning my other AMT Trans AM into a white version with blue interior next with a biue chicken I printed on decal film. That looks good already, so I'm chomping at the bit to complete my black and white pair of Pontiacs! Enjoy! I made my own TRANS AM logos from downloaded images printed on a color laser onto white decal film with black around the letters. I touched it up with Future to blend with the paint. My first try at this...works for me! ![]() I love this angle. It captures the 70's swoopyness.....I found this cool textured paper to place the model on. Looks kinda like worn asphalt! I used a gold Sharpie to add gold striping to the mirrors and fender vents. I also stripped the chrome from the wheels, painted them gold and used a silver Sharpie to pick out the snowflakes....again, works for me! ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm debating adding a CB antenna and the rebel front plate, but done for now. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I did a little weathering under here, not a bunch of mud Burt Reynolds probably laid down.... ![]() I added some plug wire is all in here. The rest I tried to capture the different materials and sheens with paint: ![]() The Pontiac Trans AM engine bays are pretty places.... ![]() The Revell black decals are not black enough and while the stripes are gold, for some reason the screaming chicken is a dark yellow. This is most apparent in the overhead shot below when the light hits it just right: ![]() |

Re: 77 Pontiac Bandit Trans AM Blackbird
Thanks for the comments! I'm working on a white 78 one now with blue screaming chicken hood and blue interior from the junky MPC kit I raided decals for this one. So far so good. I'm using it as an experiment with my own home made decals and my intro to using acrylic craft paint instead of enamels and lacquers. It's working so far but there are interesting challenges and trade offs using acrylics. I will post pics in the WIP soon.
