94 camry acting up again

Had some similar issues back in 2012 that I posted on here and got some great input. But this time its a little different; Have a 94 camry with the a 96 1MZFE engine installed. It starts up fine, idles great, accelerates great, problem is after driving a few miles up the road, it gets a hesitation to it, you press the gas pedal and engine dies, let of pedal and engine idles, just barely press gas pedal, and it will keep engine running to make it back home. Once back home, it stays idling, but it sounds rough, give it gas, and engine dies, let off pedal, and engine idles again, it will stay running up to about 3000 rpm before it dies each time. During my last ordeal with this, I put a good used "igniter" & "ECM" (which I had to replace 2 capicators on board) and everything ran good till now. Kind of at a loss, need some insight on this, if any one can help me please.
Oh, the "check engine light" does come on each time this happens. I can't remember the code or codes it sets, but I will check scan again and post what they are.
Thanks,
Randy

Re: 94 camry acting up again

I would look first at the Coolant Temperature Sensor. Let's see what the code says.

Re: 94 camry acting up again

well today got around to checking code; had a P1300 (Igniter circuit malfunction - #1)
then started car up, it acted up right then, acting like it was running on 5 cylinders. I just let it run, revving engine up, check connections under hood, finally after about 7-8 minutes, it leveled out and ran great, let it run about 20 minutes setting in driveway and did great, it would not act up. the igniter was a little hot, not sure if that is normal, shut it off & started it several times to get to act up, but it would not. i unplugged the coolant temp sensor plug, and engine died, connected back, and started up (did this while it was running rough). then reset fault code.

any thoughts?????

Re: 94 camry acting up again

Next check the connections on the ignitor. Check the wires between the ignitor and the ECM for breaks or shorts, bad insulation, frays, etc. May have to replace the ignitor if you can't find a wiring problem. Is the ECM the correct one for the '96 engine or is it a '94 ECM? There may be a difference.

Check the resistance of the coolant temperature sensor. Resistance should be around 1.5 kohms at ambient temperature and around 0.2 kohms at operating temp.

Re: 94 camry acting up again

the ECM came out a lexus that was wrecked, can't remember the year some where between 94-96. The numbers were close, its been in car since 2012 and has no problems till now. I listed the number differences back in 2012 on here and someone replied and said it would work fine. Still have to check resistance on coolant sensor!!
