F1 LM2 sold to the US?

Hello all,

Im an old reader but a new user.

I`m Nicolás, from Buenos Aires.

My inquire is about this photos that im posting here, that were taken by someone here (http://www.reddit.com/r/spotted/comments/33mzao/).

So.. if this is true, now in the US are the LM3 of RL and now, LM2.

There are 2 remaining in Brunei, right?

And the last one at McLaren if i`m not wrong.

Cheers,

Nick.

Re: F1 LM2 sold to the US?

There are 3 in Brunei [1 papaya orange, 2 black ones with differing designs], 2 in the US [LM3 and LM2 like you rightly state] and the prototype XP1LM here in the UK at Mclaren.

LM2 was over here in the UK for a fair whle before recently being shipped over to the US

Re: F1 LM2 sold to the US?

Im local to the EPA facility that is working on LM02 currently. Apparently they have performed the conversion on all the F1s that have entered this country.

I called them yesterday and talked to the lady that answered the phone. She first denied any such vehicle being at their facility, then told me that technically any property within the facility is still "foreign" and as such isnt available for public view. She mentioned that should I just "show up" attempting to view the car, I could face arrest and that if i were patient, I would be able to view the car at a museum soon enough.

Im still working on it but its not looking good. I figure I could always just hang outside with a camera and hope to see it but at the same time, I have a family and other responsibilities haha

A friend of a friend lives across the street from the facility and he may setup a camera in hopes to capture some images of LM02 going in and out even though with the current state of the city, I doubt they'll be driving it much.

Funny enough, I was having dinner down the street from the facility the evening before these above images were posted on FB. Figures...

Re: F1 LM2 sold to the US?

They've probably done 1/3rd of the EPA conversions on F1s - maybe slightly more. There are currently 6 companies that are authorized by the EPA to perform the conversion work on non-US spec cars and from this list, JK, G&K and Wallace Labs all have history converting F1s for entry under the DOT's 'Show or Display' exemption.

Re: F1 LM2 sold to the US?

Well, i haven`t thought about the EPA. So, the car may be is in Baltimore just for the EPA, and then shipping it to another State or Area?
Does someone know where is it going or who is the lucky new owner?

It seems weird to me that this recent "sale" wasn`t notice or that no one spoke about it. One of the 5 LM cars has been sold!! And the 3 from Brunei won`t be for sale at least for many many years, and the RL`s one, i guess, either.

Best Regards,

N.-

Re: F1 LM2 sold to the US?

The sale of LM2 occurred over a year ago and has been discussed and/or was known to many of us. The car will end up in Chicago with the owner of F1 road car, chassis #001.

I had previously posted news of this Baltimore sighting here in the American Fleet thread as well.

Re: F1 LM2 sold to the US?

Not to worry - this owner drives his cars. He's been to both F1 Tour's with chassis #001, and even allowed Road&Track magazine the opportunity to borrow it.

Here he is in #001 on the roads of Chicago about a week ago.

He's a true enthusiast and exactly the type of person who should own this car.

Re: F1 LM2 sold to the US?

I didn't know they had to do conversions to F1s for the states. What kind of conversions do they do?

I though it was kind of sacrilege to mess with the construction too much....

Re: F1 LM2 sold to the US?

The changes aren't anything that would impact the car's value. Opening up the ability to import the cars to the USA actually had a positive increase in all their values worldwide.

F1s are currently imported to the USA under a provision called "Show or Display" which waives the vehicles need to conform to our Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards - things that influence accident protection, occupant safety, lighting, glazing - need no modification whatsoever.

It is simply the vehicles emissions which need to be tested to confirm they meet the standards in place for the year the vehicle was manufactured. While not every EPA conversion has been carried out the same way, largely they are non-intrusive at least in a permanent fashion.

The need to conform to those EPA standards lifts when the vehicle reaches 21 years of age, and the requirement to import an F1 under "Show or Display" will expire when they reach 25 years of age based on the year in which each chassis was built.

Re: F1 LM2 sold to the US?

You wouldn't need to import a 288 GTO that way - they are already older than 25 years of age which is when the requirements for vehicles to conform to our laws is lifted.

An Enzo would not necessarily be eligible for Show or Display because there was a US-version of the car. However, Enzo #400 was imported under Show or Display given the caveat of historical significance relating to it being the last produced and the connection to the Pope. Safe to say there are not any other Enzo's which would have equal provenance in order to be considered for the exemption.
