get the manual transmission, bell housing, clutch pedal assemly, flywheel, and driveshaft from a camaro with a 305. Or get a manual camaro and put a 350 in it.

You wont meet your budget if you're going to do a swap into a Manual car.

Over all, No... Unless you've got connections you wont reach the 12's on a budget less than $3000.

Only way I can see it's possible. Is to rebuild the motor with some forged pistons and about 8.5:1 or 9:1 compression and slap on a Centrifugle type Supercharger. Then you may have the Hp needed to reach 12's.

That right there will run you close to.. if not a bit over $3000.

But your transmission and rearend wont last too long with a modified motor.

You're going to need to go through the entire driveline to make it reliable.

Yes, For Drag racing the automatic tranny is your best bet. It'll yeild you more consistant ET's by shifting at the same place everytime. (If tuned properly)

Anyway you look at it, you'll have to rebuild the motor. Cause if you get say a new set of heads/cam and install them onto a short block with 16 years worth of driving on it. The top end of the motor with destroy the lower half. Reason being, the lower half of the motor is broken in and pretty loose by now... then you slap on a new and really tight valve train plus with the fact that the new heads are shoving in more air. The motor will not last very long with this sort of strain. I should know cause it happened to my Grandpa's Van.. he had just the valve train redone and with in a month the motor was shot and had zero oil pressure. Still ran... just not very good.

The way I can see it, is a rebuild is in order if you expect the motor to last. A set of newer heads of at least 2.02/1.60 valves, bigger cam, headers to match it all...

That with a intake port and match to the heads... should be enough for 13s... You'll need a higher stall converter and a good rearend to help put you into low 13s

I'm not sure if this is supposed to be able to pass emissions checks... so that'll hinder on on what sorta things you can do to it. But theres lots of ways you can get into the 12's either supercharge it or go for nitrous. Either way, you'll need to rebuild the motor for those haha.. sorry but you cannot expect a old motor like that to want to just wake and run 12's immediately and like it.

It's not too terribly hard.

There's plenty of books written on the subject... Just follow them to the letter and you should be fine.

Jegs
Summit Racing
Pace Performance

Go to these websites and order the free catalogs.

It'll give you an Idea of how much you'll probably need to spend to make your F-body into a 12 second machine.

By the way, Pace Performance deals only in GM products. Good catalog to have for a Chevy owner.

Happy Trails.

A lot depends on the condition of the car you buy. Since you say you're not that good with cars, I'll assume that you won't do the labor on your car. Even with a healthy and strong running Iroc Z-28, I think $3g's would only safely put you in the mid 13's..
