[Popacork]

The factory radio/cassette player in my '94 325i stopped functioning........ almost. There is no amplified signal. Sometimes it displays "MUTE / PHONE", and sometimes it displays the tuned station but there is no sound. The malfunction seems to be simutaneous with the re-appearance of speed #2 on the A/C fan which had stopped working 2 years ago. I'm not kidding. Ideas?

The problem is with your radio and it needs to be replaced. Common problem. Not cheap with a factory radio. If money is a concern, go with an aftermarket one.
