Differential Repair Question

Hey guys,

My '99 K1500 suburban (old body style) has the G80 rear diff option. In a rather embarrassing performance in the snow I discovered that the rear diff doesn't lock up like it should. (4x4 is disabled for another reason, I started a thread on that which some of you might have seen)

I want to open up the diff and find out what the problem is, then head to the scrap yard and find replacement parts. Are all the G80's from ~88-99 roughly the same? Or at least have similar internals? I want to get an idea before I go into a bunch of random pickups/burbans/tahoes looking for parts.

Thanks!

-Alex

Re: Differential Repair Question

This locking diff unit cannot be disassembled, the salvage yard will have an interchange guide for onfo on what fits what.

You sure? I found a disassembly guide online here http://www.offroadtb.com/articles/ho...ntial-rebuild/

Also, I'm not sure if Crazy Rays has any info whatsoever...they keep their prices cheap by doing minimal to zero effort

Re: Differential Repair Question

These rear diff g80 require the rear cover to be removed the box/gears/magnet cleaned then the use of 75-90wt synthetic gear lube... if this is how you service it I would be surprised that it is not locking quickly as it should..

when these fail teeth break off or the pinion is worn from improper service procedures.

Re: Differential Repair Question

I got this vehicle w/ 245,000 miles on it and have no idea how it was serviced. j_cat, to clarify, the diff is not locking at all...period. I suspect the governor assembly is shot.

open the diff up see what mess you got... check the wear/teeth etc.. is the diff oil brown or very dark., is this the correct oil ???

my suggestion is you open this up and clean it all out and put the proper fluid in it...
my experience with these is as the fluid ages it delays the engagement ,,
