Switching to taller wheels, sacrifice handling? 328is

I have 1997 328is with Sport package. Stock wheels are 16". I wanna upgrade to 17". The tech at the BMW dealer said that if i increase the diameter my handling won't be the same, because the suspension is tuned for 16's. Wider is okay, but not taller.
MY QUESTION: Is there anyone out there that's changed to a taller size and notice a change in overall handling?
I'm not ready to start messing around with the suspension.

it'll change a bit, but you probably won't notice it much
i'd suggest a suspension kit though, that would much improve your handling over stock

I have 18 inch wheels on my '98 328is and it still handles great. I never drove it with any other wheels, but I would imagine that it would not be as good. You can always put on some awesome tires and get good grip no matter what size you run.
