94 Buick Century 2.2 won't start

I am trying to help a friend on a 94 Buick Century only I have come in after the work began and am confused. He was stopped at the traffic light and the car just cut off. Never was able to crank it again. He replace the timing chain, coil pack and fuel pump relay. We have set the timing and replaced the crank shaft sensor. The problem now is the car turns over like it wants the crank but will not crank. We are getting backfire through the carb. Does anyone have any suggestions what we should do next? Thanks for any help you can give us.

Re: 94 Buick Century 2.2 won't start

Welcome to AF!!

Do a compression test on the engine to see if you have equal compression across all cylinders. Low compression will cause a no start condition. Also check to see if the fuel is getting to the engine. Low fuel pressure can also cause a no start condition. If the pressure is low check the fuel pump or replace the fuel filter as you may have a blockage. Try spraying starting fluid into the throttle body while someone cranks the car. If it starts the problem is in the fuel system. If not your ignition system is the issue.

If the vehicle cranks good but won't start, you go with the basics. You check for spark at the plugs and injector pulse with the engine cranking.

The fact that it backfires through the intake sounds like you have spark and fuel, I'm not sure about the timing? Fuel pressure is always an issue.

Do the cranking rpms sound any different? Do you have cranking vacuum.
