Push in on them and see if they lock in.
If not remove dash cover and see what is going on with there locks or hold down parts.

First Guess: Retaining tab(s) have broken. If you can find them, it may be possible to epoxy/super-glue them back into place. Otherwise, a replacement panel may be in order--either new from the dealer, or scavenged from a salvage vehicle.

If the locking tabs are broken, you can try some black silicone (RTV). Just a small dab at the 4 corners of each switch should do. Use a rag or paper towel to cover the switches and then tape securely to panel until silicone is cured. Carefully trim away the excess.

FIFY. Silicon is not the same as silicone.

Re: "buttons" for airbag, cargo lamp, etc not in place

thanks for the replies, I pulled the dash trim off and found that the tabs are indeed broken. So my new question is then, will the airbag "switch" come apart from the black square housing? (is the black piece alone replaceable? including the tabs that hold it in place)
