1967 Lotus 49 - 1/20

Time to crack into another kitset. As soon as I spotted this Ebbro release of the Lotus 49 I knew it would be a stunning addition to the shelf.

I sourced the kit from Hobbylink Japan, again with stella service and shipping. Shipped on a Thursday afternoon from Japan, and arrived Monday morning 7am on my door in New Zealand. Super quick service there!

Kitset: http://www.hlj.com/product/EBR20004/Aut

Wheels and tyres come with the marking already on them, they look superb and don't have mould lines down the centres either which is great!

I will be building up the 1967 Jim Clark #5 machine. This certainly is one of the most iconic race cars of all time in my opinion, and one of the best looking too.

It's the weekend so am hoping to get stuck in to the kit! Updates soon.

Looks like a really nice kit. You must be a Grand Prix Legends vet from back in the day. Will be interested to watch this,

Re: 1967 Lotus 49 - 1/20

A little more progress finally on this one. I have spent way too long thinking about whether or not to paint the stripe, or use decals. I have ended up opting to go box stock and see how the front nosecone decals work on the kitset. We can always paint later on.

Comments welcome as always.

Lovely kit from Ebbro and you've made a nice start. I feel that yellow decal stripe is going to be a problem though. Is it going to wrap flawlessly around those magnificent curves..?? I hope you prove me wrong, but I feel painting the stripe would yield a better result..
Please keep the updates coming, look forward to seeing this progress further..

Re: 1967 Lotus 49 - 1/20

I built the Lotus 25 and used the kit decals. It did require a lot of microsol around the windscreen to dash transition but everything flattened out and the yellow color was quite opaque. I know this isn't a Tamiya but it may as well be given the association.

Hi Steve and CrateCruncher!

I am sincerely hoping (I was doubtful as well about the decal) so am going to be photocopying the sheet before I lay them down incase I need a template.

The sides of the monocoque have been fixed in place now just the top panels as you can see in the pics will require the decals as well as the nosecone. Microsol is at the ready so we shall keep fingers crossed that they go on nicely.

Hope to have another update tonight before I tackle the decal work

Good idea. That way you can try the decal and if it doesn't work as expected all is not lost and you can mask and paint the stripe. Got my fingers crossed that all goes well with the decal stripe though. It will be the easier option for sure

Re: 1967 Lotus 49 - 1/20

Hi everyone,

I spent a day cranking along on the 49. it's good to have a whole day to just turn up the music a little and build. Got a bit done and have come as far as completing the monocoque. From now on it's time to turn my attention to the front suspension and nosecone end of things. The yellow decals on this car cartograf, and are quite thick. A good drowning in microsol had them soften right up though. I love the colour combination, such a nostalgic livery this one.

Comments welcome as always.

Re: 1967 Lotus 49 - 1/20

Cheers Steve,

I am still in awe of how well this is going together, little to no cleaning required, and despite being spindly car in real life, building it in a smaller scale is challenging although not difficult.

I have done a little more work tonight. Front suspension is in, and the front cage has been built up. I am now going to leave it for a day to set solid before fitting the plumbing that runs underneath the monocoque. Next up after that is the Ford DFV...

Comments welcome as always!

Re: 1967 Lotus 49 - 1/20

The more this comes together the more I am waning to crank along with it.
Sat down for another evening of building and have got the engine buttoned up. I was surprised that the kitset called for 4x80mm lengths of 0.4mm plug cord, however the kit doesn't come with any. I hunted high and low for some however no black, hence I have used blue (I have every colour under the sun except the one I wanted) Murphy's law. Shall be moving onto the gearbox and exhausts next.

I am going to spray the exhausts in primer and leave them for that matte white look. Shall throw a small amount of black weather onto them as too pure will look a little odd. A couple of pics before I jump back into it tonight.

Re: 1967 Lotus 49 - 1/20

A bit more progress on this kit. I have joined the monocoque and engine together, sorted the gearbox and rear suspension, and also painted the matte white exhausts. They are yet to receive a little weathering so they are not super pristine.

Next up is to join the rear suspension, add the supporting struts and then button the model up. Comments welcome!
