How to mask wheels?
Hi guys,
I have a question. I've been modeling for some time now and painted many wheels, but mostly in the same color, so no masking. So here is my question. When i paint the wheels with allclad Chrome. Can i mask the outer wheels to paint the centers without pulling of the Chrome paint? Any advice would be great. Best regards, Lesley |

Re: How to mask wheels?
If i was you i would paint the center first then mask the center and spray outside. I would use alclad last. Less chance for it to come off when handling. For masking i would use silly putty. Works great on intriquite shapes.

Re: How to mask wheels?
I gave up on Alclad long ago.
You only have to smile at it and it fades, marks, falls off, goes dull after a few months etc etc etc.... Humbrol spray chrome silver - light coat over gloss black. Flippin' excellent, almost as good as Alclad and it's TOUGH. With regards masking wheel centres, I've used plasticine and even coins. Coins come in all sizes and are heavy enough to stay put. I used a £1 coin on the wheels of my 1/12 GT40. I painted the wheels orange first, then put the £1 in the centre and sprayed the silver. Great result. ![]() Roy |

Re: How to mask wheels?
Buy a circle template like the one below. make sure and get a metal one, the plastic one get cut int easily. Find the right size hole and stretch a piece of tape across the hole then using a sharp hobby knife and cut against the edges of the hole. I also use this for masking and painting brake disc and hub pieces.

This compass is exactly what I use. I even spray a fine line on 1/12 motorcycle wheels. Cut different sizes of circles with masking tape and I can do whatever I want to. Can also be used for brake discs. |
