Time Attack/Circuit Racer Mitsubishi Evo V

I've been tinkering around with models again and I've had this kit sitting in the closet waiting to be built since the Southern NNL Nationals this past November. Finally decided to have a go at it. This is the first model I haven't completely planned out ahead of time, sort of coming up with it as I go.

The overall plan is for this to be one of those crazy Japanese time-attack/circuit racers that you see in the unlimited classes with completely redone suspension and drivetrains. I'm starting off with the tube chassis out of brass, the skeleton of it all.

So lets get to the pictures.

After building the main hoop I had to machine some control arm mounts for the rear. I'll be incorporating a double wishbone rear suspension similar to that in the LMP cars.


Here you see one finished "bulkhead" and one thats been machined. I decided to use files to perfect the final shape.


Several hours and lots of filing later...

This is my first time ever doing any major soldering, let alone a tube chassis. My hat is off to those of you building brass chassis, or doing any brass work. This is frustrating!

Great job MIke, glad to see stuff from you.
Do you use "FLUX" to help the soldering action? You'll use much less solder wire witth the help of the flux, with obviously less filing then.

Hey Gio! Yeah I've been using flux. Some of the joints I've used a little more solder on so when I add more pieces and those joints heat up, they dont fall apart. Still quite the challenge though.

Wow, cool idea, love the tube rear end. I love those time attack cars, some are just so extreme and all for 1mintue of glory. Cant wait to see what you do to the body

Today I started to build the floor framework. On the passenger side I made a raised tunnel for the exhaust.

Here is the framework for the raised tunnel. I used angle brass to aid in securing the brass sheet.

Just a question: wouldn´t be easier to make it with Evergreen stuff?

wow, just wow. im sure he could use evergreen, but you won't be able to get those crisp bends that you would w/brass. looks great bro, is there gonna be a monster 4g63 under that hood??

Styrene would be a lot easier. In fact, I am building a lot of the bends and stuff out of styrene first to use as a template then bending it in brass. I chose to use brass for two reasons:

A. I wanted to challenge myself. I've seen brass work done by several fellow modelers and have always been impressed with the way it looks. Something I've always aspired to do.

B. Structural integrity. I've seen people build styrene chassis and stuff before, but I've always wondered what happens in a couple years, is it drooping? Plus the suspension perches can be a lot stronger in brass and much smaller without compromising strength.

Thanks for the kind remarks. I won't be using a 4G63...I know this is sort of sacrilegious but I'll be using a 2JZGTE.
