First Car Advice Appreciated!

Hey guys,

So I know lots of people post these kinds of questions, but I'd really appreciate some input as I don't know anyone with experience in this area.

An acquaintance of mine is offering me a 2001 Chrysler Sebring LX for $3700. 4 Cylinder engine with 141,000 miles. I've seen them drive it and it seems to work well.

Is this a good deal? If not, then what would be?

Thanks so much!

Re: First Car Advice Appreciated!

Lets start with a car going on 13 years old with 141K and being a chrysler that to a dealer is worth zero no matter how good it runs, but in a trade you could get mega bucks as long as you will pay their asking price.

Consider that the average car depreciate approx $2500. a year that to me means at $3700. purchase if you could drive this car for close to 2 years without issues your investment will be valid, personally I would not consider.

If I really like the way the car drives $2000. would be a very max, and that would be after a complete mechanical inspection where the car got a 100% thumbs up from the mechanic.

Re: First Car Advice Appreciated!

There's nothing wrong with the Sebring, but there's also more reliable cars out there if that's what is the most important to you. And in that case, you're going to want to go for either a 4-cylinder Asian car (Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic). There's also the three last-gen small American cars (Ford Escort, Chevy Cavalier, Dodge Neon) all of which are relatively reliable and long-lasting, as well as easy to work on.

Offer $2500. It's not worth more than that.
