Re: 305 to 350 swap 84 caprice
if you had a 1987 and older K5 blazer 350cu yes this can be swaped. you will also need another tranny like a 700r4 with some work done to give it durability.
after 1987 this vehicle had TBI which now creates a big jump in the cost to do this so it runs properly or at all. |

you could buy a carb for a 350 cu engine and put it on the 1992 350 cu engine. 350 cu boat engines use this type . carbs can be ordered with various fuel flow specs. still you will need a different tranny as the 2004r will not handle the 350 cu torque unless you drive it like some old lady. then why bother ? |

Re: 305 to 350 swap 84 caprice
Ok. I've decided to go with the 350. I found one with ann edelbrock carb and intake. What all do I need to modify to make this work

Using the new intake for the quadrajet, it should pretty much be drop-in. You will likely need to do some tuning on the carb once it is done. Stick with the quadrajet your car now has, forget the edelbrock.

Ok but honestly my rochester q jet is in pretty bad shape. Rebuilding won't do much. His words not mine

And the edelbrock is a 650. Whatever that is?

Re: 305 to 350 swap 84 caprice
Second vote for sticking with the Rochester. Unless the bowl, lid, or TB are broken, it is rebuildable. The throttle shaft may require some attention after almost 30 years, especially the left side of the primary bores. The main and secondary jet well plugs should get some attention to eliminate common leakage points (Details HERE), and the entire unit should get a thorough cleaning, but the rest is cake.
Unless you have somehow got your hands on a Canadian (export) model 1984, you will NEED the TPS input from the E4ME carb to the ECM for the transmission TCC to operate properly and for the ECM to advance spark correctly since the distributor has no mechanical nor vacuum advance. If you can't find someone in Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, McHenry, or other collar counties to repair it, I'm 80 miles west. Better yet, do it yourself so you KNOW it is done properly. A Sorenson 96-530/96-566A kit is about 25 bucks at the chain parts stores, and the bronze bushings are available at any well-stocked hardware store (not a home center/lumber store) or small engine repair shop (Briggs 231218). The Edelbrock is an O.K. replacement for an older, non-CCC application or off-road use, but is not all that great for a daily driver. I've removed several.

Re: 305 to 350 swap 84 caprice
I agree, years ago I abandoned my entire ECM and went to an Edelbrock 650 CFM carb and changed my ignition system to an HEI vacuum advance. In hindsight, it wasn't a great move. The E4ME Q-jets aren't as bad as many people think. I have done a 305-350 engine swap on my '84. I took a 4-bolt main 350 out of a 1992 Chevy 2500 and transplanted it into the Caprice. I used the TBI and all. It's great actually to have my '84 fuel injected now. I did some mild modifications to the TBI unit and upgraded the fuel pressure regulator to keep it from falling on its face at WOT like they are know for. The swap wasn't bad, and took minimal modifications to get the TBI computer to work properly in a car that was built 8 years prior. I'll soon be posting a thread with pics and updates as I haven't been on here in quite some time.
