Tamiya Toyota 86
This was built several months ago for Scale Auto review; after it was finished I removed the stock wheels/tires and replaced them with AVS Model 5's, with a slightly lower stance (it sits better on the driver's side vs. the passenger side, on this RHD model). Just got around to taking photos of it w/the new rolling stock. Paint is Testors Acryl Cobalt Blue, thinned with acetone to flow nicely through the airbrush, though it also required a bit of universal retarder as well for a smooth flow (it was laying down nicely, but dry-spray "pebbles" were making the surface rough). Clear is decanted U-Pol power can clear. Since I want Aoshima's upcoming BRZ STI, guess I'll have to build that one in something other than WRC Blue

Re: Tamiya Toyota 86
Great looking model. I agree with you on the stock wheels - how Subaru got that so wrong is beyond me.

Re: Tamiya Toyota 86
Great job! The engine bay looks a bit unrealistic to me, but I believe you had to build it box stock for the review, right?
Couldn't agree more! The new wheels make the car look much better, I'm even starting to like it. |

Re: Tamiya Toyota 86
What did you think of that Acrylic paint? Would you use it again? How does it compare to the Tamiya Acrylics?
What about the UPOL, are you thinning it or just decanting it? Bob, you can make any paint look spectacular. Once again, great work! Andy |

Re: Tamiya Toyota 86
Really nice build! Just a very minor imperfection: the rear fog light should be red and not orange.

I'd use the Acryl again; now that I know it can be cut w/acetone it opens up more possibilities. I don't like how it sprays using their own thinner. Acryl is stronger than Tamiya acrylics, and it was because I knew that you can cut Tamiya acrylics w/their own lacquer thinner (and some automotive thinners) that I wanted to try Acryl like that. Ultimately I had to add a few drops of retarder to get it to flow perfectly smooth. As for the U-Pol, I do add Mr. Color Thinner or Tamiya lacquer thinner to the decanted brew. Seems a bit thicker than decanted Tamiya sprays; maybe not as thick as decanted Mr. Topcote. I have some PPG urethane thinner that also works well w/U-Pol and Tamiya sprays.
