Martini Porsche 936 78' Turbo

Hi All,

I have been working on this kit for a while it seems. Caring for my first-born daughter, Sophia, has really cut into my hobby time, but I would not change this for the world. She is fantastic!!!

Enough about the baby...this is a WIP for the above title. I am building OOB and trying to experiment with some paints from Rona, a hardware store in Canada.

Here is the bulk of the body painting and some decal work. Comments are welcome.

Cheers, Rick

WOW!

Realy nice and smooth paint job you have there, the decals have gone down well.

Good luck with the rest of the build.

Great Decal work. I built this kit and had some trouble with one of those big stripe decals. If I was to do it again I would use Studio 27 decals instead of the Tamiya.

Re: Martini Porsche 936 78' Turbo

Thanks for your comments. A minor update to post. I painted the rims and rim caps (I do not know the proper term for them, I though of refering to them as hubcaps, but I feel that would have been an inappropiate description for race car tires ;-) .

I also put on some "DUNLOP" decals on the tires. I used the Crazy Modeller sheet of 1/24 Tire decals. I love these things because I was not about to paint the raised letters on the kit's tires. How tedious and time consuming could that be!!! I put the kit tires on a socket/powerdrill set-up and ground down the letter ridges on the outer wall. Then "slapped" the decals on. Really easy application for a very enhancing effect. What do you think?

Re: Martini Porsche 936 78' Turbo

The car is coming along slowly. Tires are on the chasis and paint is polished with Detail Master 3200-12000, Tamiya polishing compound and then waxed with Meguiars NXT Generation Tech Wax.

Here is the question??? Do I put the door and headlight cover tape decals on or should I leave them off. I'm still on the fence...What you guys think?

I want to spice up this dash with some paint (I don't have decals). Can you help me with any technique that will not mess up the black paint?
Thanks in advance, Rick

Re: Martini Porsche 936 78' Turbo

The worst thing happened to an almost complete build. Part of decal ripped off with some masking tape I was using to paint in the flat aluminum base for a marker light ... .

I had covered the decals on with clear, polish and wax. I guess I found a weak spot .

I am going to try to fix this, but It won't be the same as it was before.

I am going to use a spare decal sheet from another Martini livery car kit to graft from. I will have to cut each colored stripe out individually b/c the width of the spare decal stripes are not the same as the 936 kit.

After I have the decals laid down, can I clear over a waxed surface? As I mentioned on a previous post, I used a synthetic wax. Please help if you can.

Thanks in advance, Rick

Re: Martini Porsche 936 78' Turbo

Shame about the mishap with the decal. It was coming along really nice.
Maybe Tamiya is able to replace the decals. Try to contact them directly or through Rainbow Ten, a store in Japan.

I would definately NOT apply any clear over the wax. Most likely they will react or the clear will "eat" the wax.
Many waxes come out with some dish-washing soap. Give it a try on a scrape body.

Good luck,
Lusitano

Re: Martini Porsche 936 78' Turbo

Excellent job

Unfortunately, I have found that masking on top of a decal is way too risky.

I have seen and done hand painting for decal repairs as long as you can be very accurate and match the colours. Tamiya acrylics can be a good match, but you will need to be careful with the red.

Re: Martini Porsche 936 78' Turbo

Here is the patch job on the damaged decal. It is not perfect but good enough for me to enjoy looking at the car on my shelf.

Like I mentioned before, I cut the color stripes from a spare set of Martini decals, from another kit. The color is a little off and the alignment is too. I would call this model a half decent 4-footer, meaning it looks alright from that distance or greater.

Cheers, Rick

Rick,

Have a little look at my progress thread and you will see what I have done with the dashboard for my Stratos. I would suggest keeping the dash matt black, the clocks and edges gloss black and pick out the relevant lights in polished alu. Once this is dry clear coat over the top of them in the appropriate colour.
There is no secret to this apart from patience and a steady hand, dont put too much paint on your brush too.

Best of luck - build looks excellent otherwise and good recovery with the decals.

Sean

For what it is worth, that was a hell of a save!!!

Most people would never even know that mistake existed!

Good fix, great model.

Re: Martini Porsche 936 78' Turbo

Thanks for your kind words and advice ,Gentlemen. I appreciate your feedback.

SeanyG, I have already glued the dash in place and I was going to keep it that way until I read your post. I will give it a try soon as parenthood is taking a priority. Thanks again.

Cheers, Rick

Re: Martini Porsche 936 78' Turbo

I decided to dry brush silver paint over the ridges and highlite the lights/switches with color ( Sorry SeanyG, I did not have time to try your method). The pictures below are a little on the dark side to see the silver, but it is there, Trust me...

The build is finished. You can view my Porsche 936 at this link:

Very nice build up of this good looking car. Nice save with the decals too.

Re: Martini Porsche 936 78' Turbo

It's looking really nice, bad luck with the decal. I have had that sort of thing happen before and know how frustrating it can be after progressing so far. Your invisible repair was successful too!
