Exclamation 2006 Chev Malibu Fuel System

Hey,

A co-worker has a 2006 Malibu, V6 (3.5L) with ~125,000km (77500 Miles) with a fuel gauge issue.

She tells me that when she fills up the tank with gas and drives for a few minuites, the gauge reads that its empty and tells her to fill. When the tank gets low, the gauge reads full and says shes got 600+ Km til empty. I am a little versed in mechanics, and all I can think of is either the fuel pressure sensor is messed up (She did tell me that her check engine light came on, but when she opened the tank and closed the cap, it went away. Now it is on all the time) or its the fuel sending unit, which I take it as its on the fuel pump.

Also, if it is the unit, does the tank need to be dropped? I looked underneath and did not see the regular bands that would be required to remove in order to drop the tank. There is a small cut out and 3 tabs that are protruding out. (I assume it is a gas tank shield with a hole cut into it for the fuel pump). Am I correct in my thinking?

Thanks

Dibsing

There should be two straps holding the tank. Yes, it needs to be dropped.
