Black box under battery holder

2006, 4 cyl. Dropped a battery hold-down bracket nut behind the battery.
Had to take out the battery holder to get to it. Good thing cause I found a broken vacuum hose going to the box underneath the battery holder. Spliced in a 4 inch piece of hose and all OK. Curious what the black box is under the battery holder that the vacuum hose went to. It's been suggested that the black box has something to do with vapor recovery. Anyone have a definite answer?
