cryo'd gearbex internals - R32

Has anyone tried cryo'ing and shotpeening the internals to the gearbox and did you get anywhere with it?

I know that that is the last thing to go (as everything is being rebuilt) and I don't want to waste anymore money.

Thanks

Kevin

Most people just go for replacement gearboxes if they want them in high HP cars.

I have considered that but with the price of an OS Giken Gear set being so cheap its not worth cryo treating or shot peening , more than likely 3rd gear will be the first to go.

What is the cost of the Giken gearsets down under? I have gotten some pretty high numbers here in the US for the gearsets.

And did you only replace 1-3 with the Giken sets?

I have not done mine yet , I have to get the car going first , I think they are about 220000 jpn yen and you need to add bearings and R33 type synchros and selector hubs on top of that figure . a friend has just got a set but has not installed it yet. that is a complete set 1 through 5 with new input shaft etc as well , NZ's fastest GTR is making 870 hp and is using one of these sets. there are several you can get with the most popular one seeing a really tall first gear (able to do 100 kph @ 9000 rpm).

Wow, thats not bad at all, I definately think that I may just do that instead. I would need to know exactly what all needs to be changed - simply becuase I need to have those parts shipped with the gearset.

Are the additional parts needed the R33 syncho's, the hubs and the bearings, and that is it?

I am interested, simply becuase I cannot afford the Hollinger, yet....

if you have a late model R32 (93-94) then your gearbox parts will fit , an early model one will require updated parts as you cant get selector hubs or synchros new for older ones anymore , 300Z parts from 93 -94 onwards would be the same I think so you might be able to check them at a local nissan dealer , bearings are the same .

Thanks Brenhan,

It is a 1990 R32, so what you are saying sounds like bad news. I may be able to find the selector hubs used in Japan through my contact, I am going to have to check.

Else - it will probably be a full replacement tranny, which is big $$.

Thanks for your help.

not quite , all the internals will still fit in your gearbox but your current hubs and synchros wont work , you will need newer ones but you can still use your gearbox case , transfer case etc , I think that 300000 yen will be what you should budget on including new selector hubs and syncros from nissan japan. the bearings you can get from anywhere , they are nothing special but try to get a good brand. It may be easier to get a destroyed R33 box and build that with new os giken internals , the hubs and synchros wont be too bad.

Wow, thats not bad at all, and I may just have an R33 gearbox shipped over for that reason. Going to check prices and see how they come out.

Are the hubs and the synchros the same as the 300ZX TT? I have heard that, if so, I could just go to ao nissan dealer couldnt I and get those?
