3800 rough idle, revs good
Hello, I've got a 94 olds silloutte with a rough/low idle? Vehicle failed emissions at idle. Van revs fine, and drives great. How ever it did die at a stop? Any ideas?? Thanks, Shane

Re: 3800 rough idle, revs good
I should have been more specific. Van has 140,000. Customer brought it to me with blown head gaskets. Found that the leaky water pump was the cause. Did the head gasket repair, had heads machined and gone through, replaced water pump and surpatine belt, spark plugs. Got the engine back together and runs fine with low/rough idle. Didn't really get the chance to test drive vehicle, but did drive it into shop and the low idle didn't stand out at that time? Saw a post about the crank senser being bumped during surpatine belt install. Ill check that when I get home from work. Any ideas??? Thanks, Shane

Re: 3800 rough idle, revs good
Is the Idle rough because it is too low?
What are the rpms at idle? Warm engine should be 600-650..... Any codes? |

Idles at roughly 500 rpm. The slightest bit of excell and she cleans right up. No check engine light.

Re: 3800 rough idle, revs good
500 rpms seem low......I would clean the throttle plate and bore, and also pull that IAC and clean the pintle and passageway.....
Then when engine is at normal operating temp, if rpms are still 500, I would adjust that throttle plate opening to at least 600 rpms... One other thing I would do, is with engine at normal operating temp, wait for idle to stabilize....then turn the A/C on, and see if idle increases....this will test the IAC..... |

Re: 3800 rough idle, revs good
Ok, I hooked up my snap on scan tool, the brick. Has the 300 misfire code aswell as a prndl code and tcc code. The scanner shows idle at 600 to 750 rpms. I noticed there's no code for it but it says cam crank error 1. Clear the codes and it comes back instantly, before the idle even drops to the rough missfire stage. The water pump was leaking down all over that crank senser area. I unplugged it, checked for corrosion, which there wasn't, and decided to tap on the senser with a screw driver. Plugged it back in and started the vehicle. It actually dropped of high idle and ran smooth for about 5 seconds. Hmm? I also pulled back the wires from the dist block and there all sparking strong. What do you think? Can this crank senser be my issue? Thanks, Shane

Also pulled the IAC and cleaned it and checked the passages. Looked good. Also ran it with the maf unplugged, no differance. Shane
