overheating after shut off.

Engine runs fine around 190 degrees. After shut off it will go as high as 230 with drag on the starter when cranking. Temp goes right down after starting. It's a 307. This started after replacing one head. The head was done and from a reputable machine shop. Does anyone have an answer or the had the same problem. Thanks.

Don't see any bubbles. Used felpro gasket.

Do you know the number of the FelPro gasket? There are variations in the steam and weep hole locations as well as the bore size. There there are the restrictors in the intake gaskets to wonder about, among other things.

I agree the timing is to far advanced.

Remove the radiator cap while the engine is running. If you see that the antifreeze is circulating and no bubbles, then the thermostat is open and there is no gasket leak.

Does the overflow bottle have antifreeze to the full line when engine is cold?

Go to auto zone and borrow a radiator pressure checker. Check that the cap holds pressure then check if the radiator holds pressure when cold, engine off.

again, if your holding pressure, no leaks in the cooling system. If you are not holding pressure check the dip stick because you just pumped antifreeze into the oil pan.
