1998 Jimmy 4WD Problem

Hi - there is a loud whirring noise about 25-30 mph and you can feel vibration under drivers side floor board and the truck just seems to drag when foot is off gas it just seems like its stuck in 4 wheel drive it doesn’t matter if button is in 2hi or 4hi the actuator under battery tray is compressed which I understand is that 4WD is engaged. Also to get the switch to light up in 4hi you have to hold it for about 5 seconds.

These are some of the things I tried....

- I disconnected the vacuum hose and cable from actuator under battery tray, plugged vacuum hose, the actuator uncompresses and the cable will move in and out about an inch or so pushed it in and drove truck no change.
- I tested the voltage at the plug at transfer case and it was around 12 volts

- with the front wheels off the ground, if I turn one wheel and the other wheel did not turn, so now I am confused I thought the other wheel should turn the opposite way if engaged.

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks
Chris
