Ripping out ignition cylinder?

I have a 99 olds intrigue, 3.5.

i likely will be junking this car in a 6 months or so but it has served me well for quite a while. My ignition cylinder is failing, sometimes it takes me several minutes to get the key to turn and it has left my wife stranded a couple times now.

Does anyone know if popping the cylinder so i can start it with a screwdriver is a viable option on this car? if not does anyone have a way to start the car by bypassing the key altogether? i'm not interested in it being pretty, its a work car and is completely wrecked anyway. I have access to pretty much any tool i can think of and access to a large capacity machine shop.

Any help would be nice!

Re: Ripping out ignition cylinder?

Do you mean the key will not actually physically turn? Or do you mean youre having trouble with the Security system not letting the car start?

Then ripping the barrel out won't help if the car still has a security system....

I doubt he's stealing it, car thieves don't normally seek advice on car forums.

I know popping the cylinder won't start it...he wants a bypass method and then he pops it?

Doesn't mean he's going to steal it

Have you never owned car where the ignition barrel failed?
I used to have an old Triumph with a push button start. It was easier to wire it in than replace the ignition barrel.
