1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
Hi guys,
beside the 2009 Challenger, I also start with this 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A from Revell. The kit contains a bag of nice parts. A bit flash but that will be easy to remove. The body also looks good. There is an option for a stock or drag version. So there are two hoods in the kit. I go for the stock version of this car. The hood also contains molded on fasteners, but they will be replaced with PE fasteners. There are 2 types of wheels in this kit. The original wheels looks cool to me, the others are very ugly! I go for the original wheels with a silver center and chrome lip. And of course this one will be painted in Hemi Orange, allong with the T/A striping it will look awesome. Kris.

Re: 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
First update:
I painted the chassis in Hemi Orange by Zero Paints. After this I painted the exhausts in different Metalizer paints from Modelmaster (TESTORS). The engine was painted Pumpkin Orange from Modelmaster. I also painted the airfilter that color. The wired distributor is made by Scaleproduction but nearly visible. The body is also already primered. I used Zero Paints Grey Primer for this job. Of course I scribed out the panellines first. The hood was also primered and painted with Semi Gloss Black by Zero Paints. After this I could add some BMF on the trim and I added some PE hoodpins from MR. Model. I hope to paint the body this week. Kris.

New update:
First I clearcoated the chassis. The body got a couple layers of Hemi Orange. I messed up the original wheels, so I needed replacements. I found these Cragar wheels that suit the car nicely. Kris.

Re: 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
Today I used the new improved chrome BMF on the trims. I also painted the indicatorlights.
And some decals on the body. I hope the silvering on the decals will be gone after clearcoat. Kris.

Re: 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
And here's the other update. Or maybe downdate.....
I clearcoated it with the same 2k Clear as the newer Challenger, but somthing reacted with the decals. And it was in the 3rd layer. I don't know what happened cause this clear never reacted with anything so far. Maybe it's the old decals from the kit? I don't know cause the rest is just smooth. Anyway the only thing to get it smooth again is to start again, and I just don't want to do that. I have to live with it and leave it like this. Not every model can be a showmodel right? After drying the clearcoat, I waxed the body. Now it was time to mask of the front and rearpart for some Semigloss Black. I didn't need any touch up. Kris.

Re: 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
iceracer,
It looks to me like you put a really thick coat of clear on, that's what caused it to react with the decals. Otherwise, it's looking pretty good. Yes, sometimes they go to the shelf, rather than the contest table. Carl

no I never spray thick coats on it. I build up the layers pretty thin. Never had any problems with clearcoating decals with 2k clear so I don't know. I still think it's the old decals. Next time I'll clearcoat the paint one time and put the decals on and clearcoat it another time. Maybe that will work. Kris.

![]() I think what happened maybe was that the finish the decal was on was dull? But just like you stated try putting it on a smooth clear finish and then another coat. Good luck and both builds look sweet. |

Re: 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
So far I painted the interior parts in semigloss black. They need some extra detailing though.
The body is clean now. All paint is removed with brakefluid. I scribed out the panellines againg and filled up some scratches with putty. Kris.

Re: 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
Bummer about the decals. Did you use a decal setting solution? Not all decals are compatible with them...or maybe it reacted with the clear? Good luck with the repaint!

Re: 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
Hope you are able to turn this one around, nice build so far. Do you mist the first coat of 2K clear on and allow it to 'flash off'?
This helps to seal the decals from any reaction with wet coats. I try to get several bodies ready at the same time, some of these will be recieving a pre-decal coat of 2K clear and others will be getting the final top coats. I also thin it a bit more than recommended to give a smoother finish. Good luck, Steve. |

I also thin it much more than recommended. My clearcoat is like water and it's really smooth and no need to polish, only a bit rubbingcompound. I don't know when I receive my new decals, but today I'll put the first clearcoat on it and wait for the decals. Kris.

Re: 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
New update.
While uploading some pics, some are dissappeard.... So i only have some finished pics of my interior. I used grey interiorflocking, and tryed to paint some things in woodlook. I also added some small accesoires like magazine, modelkit and sunglasses. I also finished the chassis. First I glued the engine in place. After that I placed the suspension and exhaust. Now I could start some little wheatering. I also finished the frontend. First I painted the chrome trim. Than I placed the bumper and lights. As finishing touch I added a PE numberplate. Now I can go further to fit the wheels. And I have to find a solution for the exhaust. It doesn't look to realistic. Kris.

Re: 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
Wow after a very long time I finally have some new decals. Revell usa wasn't able to help me (long story...) but after a few days of waiting there was finally an article on ebay.com. I did some bidding and won the decals! Yes!
Yesterday they arrived: I hope to get back on this one tomorrow. I want it finished before 2012. Kris.

Re: 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
After placing the decals, I could finally clearcoat the body for the last time. I mixed up some 2k Zero Clear and added a few layers.
When this was dry I started polishing with different polishing compound to get a nice shine. Once this was done I was ready to place all bodyparts like windows, spoiler and more smalle stuff. The rearspoiler was to shiny in my opinion and I gave it a few layers of matt clear. On the rear I was missing a numberplate. So I used the decal from the kit and added a PE frame on it and finished it with some Clearcoat. The hood got the same attantion as the rearspoiler. It was to shiny so I added a few layers of matt clearcoat. Now it's much better! And some dryfits: Meanwhile the wheels are glued and drying. I only need to remove some fingerprints and give it a good wax treathment before I make final pictures. Kris.
