05 Sierra 5.3l burning coolant at start
Can anyone give advise on this truck burn Copland on start. It uses about 1 quart every 3 day of water. It has 93k miles. I feel I can change a head gasket myself, but if there are any hidden do and donts I would like to know ahead of time.
If it's just a gasket, should I changed both? Is it a fairly easy job, it look simple but...... The vehicle has never overheated as far as I know, is it common for this low of miles to have it burning coolant. |

Re: 05 Sierra 5.3l burning coolant at start
Does your exhaust smell like coolant? or does your exhaust look white-ish? If so, that is a good indicator that it is a headgasket. Also, check your oil to see if it's a milky color?
Though, a very simple thing to do is check all your spark plugs and see which ones are cleaner than the others. The cleaner ones will indicate coolant. While you have your plugs out, do a compression test with a compression gauge (can be had at a parts store), it will go where the spark plugs go. Find some info on the compression your engine is supposed to have, then check it against your findings.
