Re: well, my car is dead

wow they totaled out the car for that? that car has $3000 in damage tops. I would suspect that your car is worth close to $4000-$5000. What percent of damage vs value does it need to be in your state to total out the vehicle?

Coming from four years of personal experience, if you want to mod and actually have gains, stay far far far away from the E46. If you want to mod and have it sound cool, look good, and be a reliable comfy DD, get the E46. Personally, I'd go for the Z. Oh wait, I did... Good luck on coming to a final decision, it looks like you picked the exact same three cars I did for what I wanted to get next, lol.

I'd stay away from the Miata unless you really, really, really want it for a track car.

they told me about 4 grand in damage. no frame damage, but the trunk floor had to be changed, so that was about 1200 with labour alone. not really complaining about it though. i honestly thought the car was worth about 3k with the amount of rust on it. i took all the aftermarket stuff off it, and sold it.

want a DD with some fun. not really looking for power adders, maybe ss lines, pads, rotors, tires. want to learn how to drive the car first, then comes the suspention and power adders. gonna have the car for 5+ years easily.

getting out of the sentra game, as with the sentra, i prayed to the gods for a car that would be appeasing to teh womenz too, and god gave me the sentra and said good ducking luck!

i drove the miata and i loved it. just enough power for me to evolve as a driver, and not create bad habits driving a 'high' powered car. no blind spots, nothing wrong at all with the car.

same thing with the s2k. but the s2k was quieter on the interior, and its of higher 'quailty' as it originally was a 32k car. same as the miata, but more power higher up in the powerband.

bmw was a bunch of fun. seemed simplistic, but easily a dd, and can still have some fun with it if i choose to.

cant really say anything about the z, as i havent driven one yet. i want to however.

thought about a rx8, but the more i drove my buddies, i couldnt understand the fuel economy out of it, and the fact that if i wanted to increase the power, i couldnt make over 200whp with bolt ons and a tune. talk about disappointing. i love the motor, and the smoothness, but where i live i dont see it being fesable as people will start the car, move it 20 feet, and shut it off. have a feeling about it being flooded everyday.

The Z would be a good choice. IMO I would stay away from the BMW. While these are very attractive and very fun cars, everyone that I know who owns one has complained of very high repair bills and that the repairs come often. Just an observation.

If anecdotes are data, I had mine in the shop once for an actual repair, and it was my fault...sorta. $400 oil change was the result. Other than that, if you have any basic idea of how to care for a car, it'll run you just fine all day long. I have more than one person I know on a first name basis with well over 100K on their E46s. Just an observation.

If you like the Miata...well I can't help ya there, lol. I dunno, had a bunch in our Mazda club, even got some seat time on one. I just couldn't get into it. And I totally agree with you on the RX-8. So much possible potential, but the aftermarket just said "eh, screw it."

Re: well, my car is dead

Miata + Hardtop = Win

I'd say 350Z would be the best choice for daily fun car to learn with, they make plenty of power stock to get you into enough trouble. I've had plenty of seat time in a 350Z and they're fun to ride in, only drove it for a few blocks to get my buddy home once (drank to much).

I've got some seat time in a Rx8 on a track, it was a fun car, smoooth linear power. But... eh. It could of been better.

Re: well, my car is dead

to let me get back to reality before i drove the z (driving the undercover tank), i drove an 08 wrx. had a short shifter and a spl exhaust or w/e. was a cool car, had the fun power of 1st gear, but after that the trans seemed notchy, and awd really takes power away from the car. i could drive that day to day, but it was almost 'bland' covered by a fun awd launch. turbo seemed laggy at 70mph. going from 5th to 3rd and redlining, it just felt like it was held back.

drove an 06 z today. lets just say that i now know what im getting in about 2 weeks. has everything i want. low end grunt, revs high very nicely, brakes awesome, and no blind spots. love the trans. throws are where i want them. not too long, not too quick. like the revs under 3k at 70mph for freeway driving. took me a second to learn the clutch in this thing, but after i got used to it in 5 minutes, im used to it, and the car begs to be driven. audio is good enough imo. although there isnt much room in the hatch for anything, it works for me. i tend to travel very light as it is so its not a big deal for me.

Same thing happened to me. I never liked the Zs all that much still I started doing research. Then I drove one and it made sense. Lots of it. Any plans for mods?

Re: well, my car is dead

no mods really. get the car, change all the fluids over to motul, stainless steel lines, and just drive it. eventually grab/upgrade to the brembo calipers and rotors and just enjoy the car. most likey do some cooling mods (oil cooler, trans cooler, koyo rad, silicone hoses, etc). just want to drive it, and get seat time on some track days and autox.

Re: well, my car is dead

Was never really into Miatas, they are a bit too girly for me, but put a hardtop on, and i'll drive it everyday. I can appreciate the 350z, but i dont know about most of the owners man.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

I would have to agree with that completely. Also, remember that maintenance on a BMW is pretty ghastly unless you're doing it yourself.

Re: well, my car is dead

how hard could it be? i mean oil changes, gear fluid changes, brakes. spark plugs, etc. it cant be that bad on the e46. its not like i would be doing anything extensive or out of the way.

either way, im stuck with the slow mobile for a good 3-4 years until i can actually graduate. the joys of switching my major from a social science to a health science major. its a free car so i cant complain.
