1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F60
![]() I started over the christmas holidays and so far didn't make as much progress as I liked but I thought I'll post it anyway as some might be interested and could gather some infos for their builds... I actually wanted to make this a quick curbside built but first thing I noticed when I got the kit, you have to glue the radiator assembly in place before glueing the bodywork together otherwise it won't fit due to the "extreme" sidepods... So I decided to not glue everything together and just built it like the instructions say (which won't be easy for me ) but I will add some CF decals and the radiator pipes (simply looks hideous without..).Ok enough, let's start with some pics... First testfit, BRILLIANT... everything fits together like a dream! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Followed by the first real task, sidepods glued to the chassis (you will get ugly seams if you do it after painting, also for the airintake, which is made out of two parts and these also result in unwanted panel lines... more on that later ![]() ![]() Make sure you have enough putty when building this kit, lots of pinmarks (even on top of some wing elements ) and the front of the undertray needs to be assembled with a couple of parts which also needed some putty... The chrome plated parts are great... you can easily see and remove the mold lines and then put them straight in brake fluid (which by the way did not work very well, the chrome is quite hard to get rid of...) ![]() For the paint I'll use the silver/red F60 color from Zero Paints, no experiments should be good enough for my taste . The red looks really nice... |

I got my kit straight from Japan so I could save a few bucks but nonetheless, really expensive kit...After hours of sanding, I got most of the parts ready for primer... ![]() Another little testfit, primed the first parts to see how the sanding and putty turned out, so far so good. ![]() sprayed first layer of primer for most parts . Looks good so far, all the putty work turned out fine. |

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F60
It looks like you invested a lot of time sanding (note I said INVESTED) and it paid off.

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F60
next update...
More sanding and working on the chassis after primer. I glued the airbox in place which also needed some more putty, pin marks on the inside of the parts aswell as a seam because the airbox is made out of two parts. ![]() ![]() Another thing are these "slots" infront of the sidepods. I think if I remember correctly they are for the KERS cooling. Tamiya realised this quite clever because you will get this slot after glueing the sidepod to the chassis. There is just one thing wrong with the "slot", it should go from the little "hole" almost on top of the chassis right to the bottom but that is not the case there is a small part of the slot missing (too bad I didn't take any pictures but I hope you know what I mean ).So I rescribed them with a chisel. The bottom of the bodywork as well as a part of the sidepod needs to be painted black. The parts have some small "raised" masking lines, I would have preferred them to be just like normal panel lines because sanding, polishing etc. would have been a lot easier... So I decided to scribe my own lines by using some masking tape along the original lines as a guide and then using a 0.15mm chisel. ![]() first side done, quite hard to see here actually but that is the plan, since you simply need them to mask for the black ![]() The bodypanel not rescribed yet... ![]() Finally all pin marks removed... 15 in total (only on the top side)... ![]() ![]() removing the chrome with brake fluid didn't work as planned... It was quite strange in some places the chrome came off really easy but in others it was impossible to remove any of it... ![]() On to the front suspension, these covers (or whatever they are called ) are as you can see made out of two parts, problem is that you should attach them after you glued the other suspension parts in place but that will give you a seam. So I glued the parts together (not to the chassis by the way), then I will putty and sand them and later add CF decals. The only downside to this is now that you have to cut the suspension parts in half to be able to "insert" them. Last edited by Decs0105; 01-18-2010 at 11:14 AM. |

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F60
Nice to see someone building this. I'm on the verge of getting it myself. I'm interested to see how it looks with the paint too. I also really appreciate all the tips and hints you're giving along the way, very insightful.

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F60
Hi
Nice and good progress. I'm looking forward to the application of the Zero colours. The red must be some sort of candy colour - right? The 'metallic' effect should be very very subtle. I have stared intensely for minutes on the F2008 unable to see any signs of metallic. But there is 'something' about the colour that shows it is not a solid colour. It is very difficult to capture on a picture. The colours are clearly different when you see an early F2007 (original solid fluo red/orange) and a F2008 ( candyred) side by side, but when viewing the picture it is hard to tell which one is the non solid colour. Difficult to be a modeller! Flemming |

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F60
So what does everyone think? Will a manufacturer make a transkit based off the Tamiya F60 or will they create a complete F10 model now that it's been released? Ferrari releases the F10
The livery looks reminiscent of the "Schumi" age F2000-F2005 cars but the only thing is... he's in a different car now! ![]() |

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F60
It is actually quite hard to get these chisels (look for BMC Chisel), I got mine from http://b-field.net/. But I recently saw that Baracca also has some on sale which look exactly the same http://www.club-barchetta.com/

![]() Ok after being ill the last week and no modeling, I finally have something new to show you guys... Still a lot of prep work which takes a lot longer than I thought and I just happen to always find new stuff I could improve I continued working on the chassis which showed another little flaw, there is a little gap from the separate sidepods. I couldn't find any pics of the real car which show this area but I don't think it was like this. I also glued the airbox in place and filled the seam with putty... ![]() ![]() rescribed the "masking" line on the body panel, as described in the last update. You actually can't see much here but I already uploaded the pic so I'll post it anyway   ![]() First testfit with all suspension parts. Looks good, everything fits nicely. ![]() more putty work... ![]() ![]() Then I started working on the rear wing, the endplates have these nice vents but they look a bit thick, so I started to thin them down (I also used one of those chisels for this, but with a 1mm tip) ![]() ![]() I also drilled out the holes for the wing assembly to insert some cross type rivets from "Tuner Model Manufactory". The rivets I use have a 0,7mm head and are available as cross, slotted or allen head, which all look really superb... ![]() ![]() Then I drilled some 0,4mm holes in the wing elements so assembly of the wing should be a bit easier... ![]() Exhaust glued together and I removed all pin marks. I also tried to drill out the exhausts to get away from that "toy look" . Left side already drilled out, right side standard. I have to admit I am not quite happy yet, maybe I will just turn the exhaust tip on my lathe... ![]() Back to the chassis I sanded the seam of the airbox, glued the headrest in and sanded it a bit to remove any "steps"... ![]() rescribed the details on the chassis, so I hope they survive painting .![]() I also had a little step between the chassis and nose so I temporarily assembled it and used some #400 sandpaper to even it out... ![]() Starting to look like an F60! Body is ready for some primer... fingers crossed that most of the putty and sanding turns out good... ![]() ![]() ![]() PS.: In those last pics it looks almost like the Toyota livery |

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F60
not really an update but nonetheless might be interesting for some. Since there was a little conversation about the F60 paint on F1m.com I decided to test the Zero and Tamiya paint.
I also bought the F'artiface decal set for the F60, which look really nice... ![]() One thing I really like is this decal for the steering wheel, looks really cool. Although the little markings for the buttons is one big decal... :? It also gives you decals for the silver "stripes" on the front wing + endplates which won't need to be painted then, that is great. No worry about matching paint and decals! ![]() I finished my little "paint test", steps were as following: Zero F60 Paint: 1. Tamiya grey primer 2. Tamiya white primer 3. Zero Silver Basecoat, about 5x layers 4. Zero Red Bascoat, about 10x layers until the I got a red tone I was "happy" with Tamiya TS-85: 1. Tamiya grey primer 2. Tamiya white primer 3. Tamiya TS-85 2x mist coats, 1x wet I actually tried it without the white primer too but as it turned out both paints look a lot better with a white base. Well that could be expected for TS-85 but the silver Zero base also looks considerably darker with a grey base. TS-85 looks almost "blood red" with the grey base. I spare you with pictures of the primer , that is how the Zero Silver looks. It is not exactly "solid", it almost looks a bit "grainy".![]() Zero Red applied (left) aswell as TS-85 on right (right) without clear coat. As normal with the Zero paints without clear it looks like a matt finish. ![]() ![]() Now the interesting stuff with 2k clear (Finisher's). Both colors are quite close but the biggest difference is that the Zero paint changes the tone a lot depending on lightening and the angle you look at it... whereas TS-85 is almost "solid". ![]() ![]() The Zero paint looks a lot more metallic due to the silver base. ![]() This is under direct lightening, as you can see the Zero paint on the left looks a lot more metallic and even changes a bit to purple / "cream red" (it is actually not as "bad" as it appears on the picture but it is noticeable. I guess I should have applied some more coats of red? That could maybe help. In conclusion the paints are not far off, the biggest difference is how the paints change from lightening and the angle you look at them. The Zero paint looks a lot more metallic. TS-85 also has a metallic effect but it is so light that you probably don't even notice it. But I also think that I maybe put a bit to much paint on, because before the wetcoat you could see the metallic effect better. Anyway the flakes are really small which is perfect for 1/20. So for me personally I will use TS-85 because it is easier to apply (only 1 color), you don't have to worry about getting the exact same tone on all parts and the metallic effect is less which should be better for this scale (you can't even see the metallic effect on pictures of the real car... ) Don't get me wrong the zero paints are brilliant but I think TS-85 is the little better tone and simply easier to apply... I will decant the TS-85 now and go with that. |

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F60
They Both look great with clearcoat, you might get a better picture of what the 2 colours look like if you bend / curve the plastic test piece before painting (and it would also help in the photos) My pick was the Tamiya also, but im sure both companies have put money & resources into getting an accurate colour. If only we had an old F1 car just laying around the garage....
Cant wait to see more!!! Cant wait to see the steering wheel with those tiny decals!!
