Hello
I own a buick regal 1996 and i have to deal with some unusual electrical problems. I have no problems with my battery, alternator or starter. Sometimes the flashers wont work or just flash with different(lower) frequencies and other times they just work fine. I don't think that it's the temperature or things like that that cause the problem. It can happen every time i use the flashers. The other problem is a little more weird. I have to start my car a lot of times in one day. Usually, the car does start normally and there is no problems, but some times, it's like if the power does not reach the starter. When i turn the keys like if i want to start the engine, things like radio and dash lights turn on normally but there is no way i can hear a sound coming from the starting system. Even if i retry a lot of times it does not starts. When it happens, i turn everything off and wait about 8 minutes(it can be more) and then i turn the keys to start the engine and it starts. That is very annoying... can you help me? If you cannot help me, are you able to tell me where i can find a layout of the electrical circuits of that car? Thanks a lot! |

Re: Electrical problems with my 96 regal
Starters take a lot of juice, radios don't. Check the battery terminals, check the power line to the starter as that may be loose, corroded.

Re: Electrical problems with my 96 regal
My 1996 regal would start even if it had been sitting for a month without ever touching the gas. Then the intermittent start problem. For some reason,I grabbed the back of the solenoid(the black piece that the terminals go through) and it turned a bit. So I turned it as far as I could toward the engine and turned the key--it started. It started every time after that. After 3 weeks, I took the bad one off but when I went to hook up the pos cable--the new pos post was larger than the cable hole. After checking with the autozone guys and checking different solenoids, my bad solenoid was actually from a 350 engine. Just a FYI-enlarging the cable holes took care of that.

Re: Electrical problems with my 96 regal
i have a 96 regal custom 2 door coupe. and i have had this exact same problem in the past. from what i can gather it has to do with the security chip in your ignition key. on my key when this would happen all the idiot lights would turn off except for the security idiot light which if i remember correctly is the car telling you it does not recognize it thus not letting you start the car.
