online manuals
does anyone know where i could download a manual for a 1985 caprice?
or could tell me how to adjust the throttle valve cable? when not in limp mode its shifting into 2nd way too early. If the engine light is on, then it shifts correctly. |

Re: online manuals
thanks for that link.
Do you have an idea why it would shift normal when in limp with the engine light on, but shift too early and not stay in OD when pulling hills when the computer isnt throwing codes? |

Re: online manuals
No, that's bizarre. One question though: What's the transmission?

pull the engine failure code . post back with this info. your 1985 does not have limp mode . tranny has no electronic controls. what is the engine idle in gear stopped ? should be 650 rpm max. the transmission should go to 2nd gear at 10/11 mph , on level road with a very light throttle ... I would make a new posting with your vehicle issues. |

I would not make any adjustments until the check engine issues are corrected. making adjustments to compensate for componet failure is a very bad idea. the transmission cable adjustment normaly does not change ...it is possible it is sticking however ..this would cause erratic improper shifting...the engine issues will effect the transmission. start with known problems first. |

Re: online manuals
Its an 85 Caprice Estate Wagon with the Chevy 305 engine Code H.
I dont know which trans it has, but it has OD. If someone could tell me what to look for so i can report if its the 200 or 700. The engine light problem was corrected before, then the funny shift started. according to j Cat, my 1-2 shift is correct, it just seems to be lugging the engine so bad. i knew it was supposed to shift early but it seems to be too much work for the engine. There is a new service engine light that started yesterday that im hoping to get around to checking today. When i drove the car yesterday the trans shift seemed more normal without the early, lugging shift. |

the 1-2 upshift at the 10-11 mph is harsh when the engine is not running correctly. 1-2 shift with moderate throttle this is not so harsh. check all vacuum lines use a vacuum guage ...replace the pcv if old. make sure hoses at the carb fit tightly . make sure the vacuum devices on carb have no leaks.. check the exhaust manifold heat valve , Vacuum operated that, it is not stuck closed... what is the idle rpm in drive vehicle stopped ? |

Re: online manuals
i dont have the equipment to check the rpms. its low though like its always been. this engine doesnt seem to rev high at all, ever.
what does the manifold heat valve do? i saw it on there, will have to make sure its opening. ive read about these transmissions and that people always think they are shifting too early, but its the grumble from the engine that made me think something was wrong. I wish j Cat was near SC and id bring it over.. |

at this age now , most of these valves , have long since been locked into the full open position ...this is because the hardware has rusted to nothing left..I used stainless steel .030 wire to lock it open .. |

Re: online manuals
my heat valve still works freely.
just took the car on a 20 mile drive round trip. 10 to friends to use the scan tool, 10 home. The engine light is a speed sensor failure, said code 24, speed sensor short circuit. however on the return trip, no engine light. The wire may be loose because i had the dash apart a few months ago, but havent driven the car since, so ill keep an eye on it. im going to drive it for a week or two just because its been sitting. the trans shifts into 2 around 15mph which is fine with me, and i was able to get it to shift at 10, and the engine was still strong but i dont drive that easy all the time.. so i dont know what the problem was earlier, just have to keep my eye on it |
